Everyday
we hear about animals that need to be rescued.
Abandoned dogs, stray cats, a puppy thrown from a speeding car, a
litter of kittens on the street. High kill shelters are
filled to the brim with adoptable dogs and cats that are waiting for a
second chance. Sadly, most aren’t given one.
Their time is up before they can be rescued. There are new
animals coming in to fill the cages of the pets that were just
euthanized.
It
is the heartbreaking truth: in rescue, we cannot save every
animal.
It
is also the truth: we save as many
animals as we possibly can.
We
are not sending this email to discourage your efforts. Instead
we would like to show you how small things can make a big
difference.
11
words saved the life of a pet that was otherwise destined to die in a
high kill shelter.
In
rescue, it was a typical day. Almost Home Foundation
volunteers working together trying to save as many animals as
possible. Phone calls going out back and forth to foster homes,
“Do you have room?” “Can you help?” “Will you
provide temporary housing?” E-mails and calls back and
forth to high kill shelters: “Yes we can help”
“We will rescue that pet” “When can we transport?”
On
this particular day, we had filled up an entire transport.
There was no room to bring in additional pets.
All of our foster homes were full.
Then,
we received an email from a high kill shelter with a photo of a young
tortie (kitty). The tortie was absolutely
beautiful. She appeared to be about six to nine months
old. She had three gorgeous babies. She
was in need of urgent rescue.
The
email read: Abuse case.
Looking
at her innocent face, it is very difficult to imagine someone
harming her.
The
next words were shocking: Blind.
Oh
no! The chances of someone taking her just became a lot
smaller. A blind kitty will not be easy to adopt.
The
email continued: Tail
cut off with a machete.
It
is hard to imagine anything worse. The email wasn't
finished: Buried
Alive.
There
was no reason to read any further, it didn't matter what else was
said. This kitty needed to be saved no matter what.
The thought of this one in a high kill shelter after all she had been
through was unimaginable
Yes,
we are taking the kitty and her babies. Yes, a
foster home was found even though we had already filled up all of our
available foster homes before reading her story.
11
words and the efforts of loving, caring people changed the future for
this kitty.
It
is amazing what we can accomplish together. Think about it!
In three short years, we have rescued over 2700 adoptable pets.
This would not be possible without each and every one of you.
Because
of you, this kitty and thousands of other adoptable animals will have
a chance. This kitty will have a future that
will be very different from her past.
Thank
you all for your efforts. If possible, we want to
encourage you reach a little further. Can you
foster, even temporarily? If so, that means we can save
another dog or cat in desperate need.
Cannot
foster at this time? Can you volunteer at one of our
adoption shows? Can you help with fundraising?
If
you cannot volunteer now, can you help save adoptable animals by
donating? https://www.events.org/ahf/donation.aspx
If
you cannot donate at this time, can you send an email to show another
animal lover this webpage ?
Every effort makes a difference.
By
the way, the email ended with:
Sweet cat. (Yes, that is
13 words, but it only took 11 words to save this kitty).
Here's an update from her foster home:
Precious Mama and her kittens are all doing GREAT! Mama continues to
amaze me each day. As I was bringing Precious and her adorable kittens home, I was thinking that it might take some time for her to
learn trust - if she ever did - and accept the unconditional love that she would be getting by all. After all that she had been
through, it would not be surprising. Not so...from day one, this incredible lady settled down into her foster home as if she had been
here forever. She craves love and attention and will sit quietly in
my arms, purring and asking for more gentle rubs and scratches. I couldn't believe it. And, her kittens were off, immediately
exploring their new surroundings, taking time out to play and scuffle as any typical kittens would do...a bit shy and cautious at first,
but otherwise not a sign of the ordeal they had experienced.
Precious mama is going to an eye specialist on Friday to see if there is anything that can be done to regain some or all of her vision. No matter what, this wonderful soul is doing fine. She has no trouble at all finding food, her comfortable bed and locating her kittens. It is truly humbling to see how she has coped with her brutal ordeal. She carries the scars on her tail and eyes with lack of vision, but not her heart. We could all learn from her...
