If you do not understand what Dog Fighting is - OR why you need to sound out - please read on.

What is Dog Fighting?

Dog fighting is a sadistic, barbaric "sport" in which two dogs are placed into a ring and forced to fight until one of the dogs is either severely injured or killed. Fighting dogs are torn apart alive  If the loser survives the fight, he/she may be set on fire, left to die, suffocated or worse by a frustrated owner. One dog that lost a fight was attacked by a mob that raised a car and crushed the dogs head under the lifted wheel. 1

Why would people engage in this cruel and senseless activity?  Typically thousands of dollars are wagered on a single fight. This form of gambling is considered less risky than selling drugs. There are very limited police officers in the entire city of Chicago and other cities assigned to stop this cruelty. Thousands of dogs are fought in Chicago every night.1

Dogfighting's violent nature and appeal to gamblers have made the blood sport a brutal, yet popular pastime since its introduction to America in the early 1800s. But although the practice has since gone underground, the underlying theme hasn't wavered—dogfighting remains a malicious exploitation of animals. 2

Dogfighting is illegal in all states and and a felony offense in almost every state.

Similar to Dog Fighting is that has increased popularity is Hog Dog Fighting.  Hog dogging, hawg dawgin', hog baiting, hog dog "rodeos": They're all terms for a bloodsport known as hog dog fighting. An owner leads his trained pit bull into an enclosed pen. Again to witness animals being pitted against each other and torn apart alive.

ALMOST HOME Urges Michael Vick's suspension.   tO SEE the horror of dogfighting, GO TO http://video.hsus.org/   CAUTION:  THIS IS GRAPHIC AND VERY DISTURBING.

Why is Dog Fighting a problem for all society?

In addition to being an animal cruelty issue, this is a child welfare issue  The adults involved in dog fighting often bring their children to watch. Children are further desensitized to violence in an already violent society. Cruelty investigators report that dog fighting attracts individuals involved in gambling, drug dealing, illegal weapons, gangs and prostitution. The correlation of animal Cruelty/Abuse with Serial Killers can clearly be seen by clicking here  1

Some owners train their dogs for fights using smaller animals such as cats, rabbits, or small dogs. These "bait" animals are often stolen pets or animals obtained through "free to good home" advertisements. 2  The bully breeds that will not fight are generally used as "bait" for training aggressiveness in other dogs.

How to do people get these dogs to fight?

People involved in dog fighting devise means of torture to get these dogs aggressive.  Muzzling a dog with dozens of bees in its mouth has used to get the dogs in severe pain and anguish.  Once the muzzle is released, the dog is in such agony that it will lash out.  Other torture is used including forcing the ingestion of materials such as gunpowder or chemicals to excruciating pain in which the dog will lash out.

Any human that can stomach such treatment of any living creature is simply a monster.

How to detect and protect against Dog Fighting?

Clues that dog fighting may be happening:
- Several dogs kept in garages or basements
- Constant barking from more than one dog
- Excessive dog feces in yard
- Equipment including miniature treadmills and heavy chains.
- Evidence of vitamins or performance-enhancing drugs, including steroids
- Dogs who look injured, hungry, angry or overly submissive

Ways to protect your dog:
- Never leave your dog unattended in your yard
- Never tie your dog to a post while you run inside a store, restaurant or coffee shop
- Have your vet put an identifying microchip in your dog ... It's painless and can help you get your dog back
