Marvin’s Story
When you see his face, you see just another dog waiting for a good loving home. You also see the scars and can only imagine what horrors Marvin went through before he was found on a cold Sunday afternoon. Curled up outside a building, using it for warmth, twenty pounds underweight, several old wounds and several new wounds, this poor dog was lucky to be found alive. Marvin is an American Staffordshire Terrier, aka Pit Bull. We have all heard and seen the stories on the news painting pictures of Pit Bulls as these monster dogs that attack children, people and other dogs. In most cases these Pit Bulls have been trained to be aggressive, and have irresponsible owners who make them into the monsters they are portrayed as. Used as a bait dog in a dog fight, Marvin was most likely dumped after he was no longer needed by the cruel and horrible person that once owned him. Dog fighting is an illegal and horrible blood sport, and dogs used in dog fights usually aren’t as lucky as Marvin was to make it out alive.
Scared and timid, Marvin was reluctant at first to be placed in a carrier and transported to Golf Rose for treatment. After realizing that he was about to be saved, Marvin allowed his rescuers to safely transport him and get him the medical treatment he desperately needed. Once at the hospital, it was apparent that Marvin was in need of some surgery to clean and close several wounds he received during a dog fight. The staff treated him with such care that he began to realize that he would no longer have to suffer at the hands of his past owner, but that he may just find a loving home.
I visited Marvin the day after he was rescued and I have visited him every day since. The look on his face said it all. He was in a safe place, and getting the care he needed and deserved. When I first approached Marvin in his cage, he began to bark and he looked scared. Once he knew I wasn’t going to hurt him, he let me take him out of his cage. Once out, he seemed like any other dog looking for a home. His tail was wagging, his eyes brightened and all he wanted was to be petted. Over these past several weeks I have seen Marvin go from a scared and scarred, emaciated dog, to a healthier loving dog that will make someone a great pet.
Unfortunately the monster that put Marvin through this horrible ordeal will probably never be found, but Marvin continues to heal. He has become the favorite dog at the hospital. The staff has fallen in love with him as I have. We are looking forward to finding Marvin the loving and warm home he deserves. Only time and patience will heal Marvin’s wounds, but the outlook is a bright one. What we hope for now is that someone can find it in their heart to take Marvin in and give him a permanent home.
