This Longhair Dachshund is just adorable, but
there is more to a dog than good looks. Drew was a puppymill
breeder dog. Until he came to his foster home he lived his
entire life in a cage, without human contact other than being
pulled out to do his stud duty. When he was deemed useless
(maybe his puppies had the wrong color or the puppymill downsized),
he ended up in a kill shelter.
He has been in foster care since beginning of July and is
making slow progress. Even though he is comfortable with dogs
of all sizes, he stil gets very scared of new sitations and
new people, boys and men being the scariest to him. At the
adoption show he wants to either hide behind his foster mom
or sit right next to one of his foster siblings.
At home, he is starting to act more like a pet but he still
hasn't wagged his tail or played with a toy. At least he loves
to go on walks and comes up to his foster mom when he is running
in the yard, so she doesn't have to catch him. He has also
learned to eat regular crunchy dog food instead of the mush
he got at the puppymill.
Drew will continue to make progress, but he has a long way
to go. He is looking for someone who is patient enough to
stand back and give him the space and time he needs to come
around. A person who is home a lot, a securely fenced in yard
and at least one other small dog that serves as a role model
and for comfort would be best for him. No children please.
If you think you are the right person for this cute little
guy, please contact Almost Home. Even though his foster is
in no rush to get rid of him, she is also worried about him
getting too attached to her and having an even harder time
adjusting to a forever home.
