Promoting Black Cats with Freddy!

You may have seen AHF volunteers sporting the "FBKK" pins. If you're a Ask Freddyfan of the quarterly newsletter, then surely you've noticed Freddy's column. Maybe you've even met Freddy (yes, he is real!) at an event or assembly. So what is all of this…who is Freddy, and what is his Black Kat Klub all about?

In animal rescue, it's a fact that black cats have the lowest adoption rates and the highest euthanasia rates. They are among the first to be put down in high-kill shelters. They are also abused and mistreated more often than other cats. Many people won't even consider adopting a black cat. For this reason, most rescue groups feel that black cats are "unadoptable" and will not rescue many of them.

Almost Home Foundation is different. Part of the mission is to rescue as many adoptable cats and dogs as possible, regardless of their age, breed, color, or special needs. AHF is one of the only overtly "black cat friendly" rescues out there. Black cats are rescued and adopted out on a routine basis, and they are actively promoted in other ways as well.

Freddy is a very special rescued black cat. He was rescued by an AHF co-founder shortly after the organization began. In his foster home, Freddy worked his magic quickly. It wasn't long before he found his forever calling! As his forever family continues to foster more cats, he is always there to lend a helping paw. Freddy is calm, gentle, and friendly. He loves meeting new people and is wonderful with children and other cats. In more ways than one, Freddy has proven that he is truly special!

Due to his exceptional personality and his black cat status, Freddy was crowned AHF'S "Public Information Officer." He can be seen at events and fundraisers. He has his very own column called "Ask Freddy" in the newsletter and he has even been on TV! He participates in school assemblies and community programs. He also visits libraries and nursing homes. Freddy and his assistant work together to promote black cats and responsible pet ownership, and they work hard to raise awareness about other animal-related issues as well. With all of these activities under his collar, Freddy is truly a major part of AHF.

Freddy doesn't want the other black cats of the world to be forgotten. So Freddy's Black Kat Klub was launched to help the other black cats at AHF find forever homes. Please read the separate section about Freddy's Black Kat Klub.

Freddy is a cherished member of AHF. He could have been just another black cat statistic. Instead, he is living proof that black cats deserve a chance. If you're interested in involving Freddy in your school, group, or library—or in another community program or fundraiser—you can contact us at Freddy@almosthomefoundation.org. (Yes, that's right…Freddy even has his own email address!)
