"Rescued from a High-Kill Shelter”

Do you know what a high-kill shelter is?

High-kill shelters are animal control facilities that are required to take in every animal that comes through their doors. Most of these facilities have space limitations and struggle for resources to take care of their animals. The only way to make space for the constant flow of incoming animals is to euthanize the ones that are already there. The animals are given a specific amount of time to be rescued or adopted. Sometimes an animal is kept longer than the allotment. This is only done for the ones that have something “exceptional” about them. The rest have a pretty narrow window of opportunity to be rescued.

High-kill shelters are often cast in a bad light. In reality, most of them do everything they can to keep up with the numbers and to find rescue for the animals in their care. They also reach out to rescue groups like AHF for extra help. Over the years, we have rescued hundreds of cats and dogs from high-kill shelters.

So now you know what it means when we say “This cat was rescued from a high-kill shelter.” It means that cat got very lucky!

Amelia is one of those lucky cats. She is a gorgeous, fluffy gray-and-white girl with a sweet and angelic face. She spent over a year at a high-kill shelter in southern Illinois. Yes, Amelia was one of those rare exceptional cats. In other words, Amelia is one VERY lucky feline! There’s just something special about her. Everyone who meets her can see it…

Amelia was rescued in January of 2010, and has been waiting to be adopted ever since. Amelia is at almost every adoption show and has spent a lot of time at the Petsmart adoption center as well. She looks so regal, calm, and composed in her cage—yet has gotten passed up so many times, that we’ve lost count! Clearly, Amelia is holding out for someone who is as special as she is.

Amelia is beautiful, quiet, well-behaved, gentle, serene, and very sweet. She is on the shy side at first, and isn’t a fan of being picked up—but she loves being petted, and loves the love. She would also really like be your one and only pet. Amelia is afraid of other cats and hasn’t been exposed to dogs.

Can you give this sweet angel a forever home? Amelia has been waiting for such a long time…
