Chili |
When we adopted Chili we were not even considering getting a dog. We already had to cats at home and thought that was plenty. But when we walked into PetSmart on May 2, 2010 we fell in love. Here was this little dog with an all black head and white body. We spoke with the foster mom for about 30 minutes and decided to have her come over to our house that day. When Chili arrived, he made himself right at home. The cats didn't even mind having him there; it was amazing how well they got along. That day we decided we wanted to adopt him. We had to wait 1 week before we could adopt him. Longest week ever! It has been almost 6 months and it feels like he has been with us forever. He is best buds with the male cat Fraidy Guy and gets along with the female cat (he likes her more than she likes him). We could not be happier with any other dog. Chili picked us as his family the day he walked into our house. The Kon Family |
Lokey now Miro |
I adopted Lokey now named Miro about three weeks ago. He is a wonderful dog, very smart and playful. I love having him; I lost his foster parents address. I think their names are Jim and Judy. I want to thank them for giving me such a wonderful dog. He even gets along with my cat!The Colby Family |
Pliers now Lord Stanley |
We had been looking on the web page for a new family member after we had put our Dalmation down in March, I ran across a skinny little pug named Pliers and emailed right away. I spoke to his foster dad for over an hour that very evening, and met with him the next day. He brought the little guy with him, and our family fell in love, when our home was checked out, we were able to pick up our new family member that next day. It was a great fourth of July weekend, and Stanley is spoiled as ever, he's my constant shadow, has quite the wardrobe, and loves to be the co-pilot on car rides. So happy we were able to get this hilarious little Pug! The Wanderling Family |
![]() Twilight now Bella |
After a rocky beginning, Bella has had continued to thrive since I adopted her in June. Bella loves her ball, frisbee, and sleeping on the bed with me. After spending lots of time learning how to play, she loves being around other dogs (although she still thinks she needs to bark loudly to get their attention!) Now, one of her favorite places to be is any dog park we can find. She always makes new friends. Bella has continued to have some stomach trouble, but we're almost getting down to the bottom of it. She spends her days sleeping and chewing on bones, and her evenings going for long walks and playing with her ball. No matter where I take Bella, people stop us to give Bella some love, and compliment how gorgeous she is. Many people don't believe me when I tell them she's a German Shepard, but they're always impressed with how sweet she is. She is a wonderful addition to my family, and I couldn't imagine not having her. The Stoltman Family |
| Boomer now Winston | In April 2007, it had been almost a year since our last adopted dog had passed away. We were really missing having a dog in the house. We started visiting the Almost Home adoption shows at the Schaumburg PetSmart. On maybe our third visit to one, we walked in and there he was – the little Jack Russell Terrier named Boomer by Almost Home. He had a few quirks that made him unique – one ear had the end bitten off and he had an extra toe on one foot. His story was that when the volunteer went to the kennel he was at, the kennel worker said "he's no good". But, the Almost Home person gave him a chance and thank goodness for that. Now known as Winston, he has been a wonderful member of our family since. The Monestero Family |
![]() Willy |
In the fall of 2008, I was looking to adopt a special needs Shih Tzu. At my sister's advice, I checked with AHF, and soon foster mom Pat Mix called to say she had a dog she thought would be good for me. The Foster Mom Pat believed I was the one Willy needed. I went to Petsmart and met Pat and Willy. Willy was a little(a lot) "snarky" when meeting someone new, when there was too much activity, when startled, etc., etc.. He had been abused and was afraid of everything. I wanted to help him, and could not resist, so I adopted him. He has come a long way since that day almost 2 years ago. We recently returned to Petsmart for a visit with Pat and Al and they were thrilled with his progress! Willy is now happy and laid-back most of the time and has also learned to like meeting most people. He loves visiting my nephews, and has learned to play somewhat. Thank you so much to Pat and Al Mix, and to AHF for allowing me to adopt Willy--the work you do is extraordinary and Willy has truly stolen my heart. The Keso Family |
![]() Igloo now Stormy |
Our new puppy Stormy was picked up from foster Mom Julie's home last January 7th, 2010 in the snow storm. That is how she got her name. She fit right in with her older sisters McCarthy and EllieMae. It took a few months for Jake her older brother to accept her but now he would do anything for her even share his elk antler. She is a wonderful girl who recently got her first leg in her Rally Novice trail. I am such a proud Mom to learn everything I can about her breed and to connect with others that have the same. Please continue on with your dream of finding homes. There are many of us out there waiting for the special dog or cat you are taking care of. Thank you. The Leikam Family |
![]() Dash |
We adopted Dash in July of 2009 and he has gradually become a member of our family that we couldn't live without. He is amazingly smart and loving. We had an adjustment period, and he is a little quirky, but his licks and cuddles make up for it all. Dash and his buddy, Lucky do everything together. They play, chase squirrels, and love long walks to the park. Dash is healthy, happy, and absolutely lovable. Thanks Almost Home! Sharon, Alyssa, and Nick Lovinelli |
![]() Mackie now Butters |
We adopted Mackie (now Butters) a week ago and we couldn't be happier with him! Butters immediately became part of our family and we love him so much! He loves to go on long walks, play in the park outside our condo, and cuddle up next to us on the couch. He is a big hit with everyone- whenever we take him outside, he makes lots of friends- with both dogs and people. He is the nicest and friendliest dog you will ever meet and he makes us smile every day.
Thanks to everyone at Almost Home and for bringing Butters into our life! Tracey and Ryan Doyle |
![]() Arita now Sophie |
We recently adopted Sophie (Arita) - a min pin transported from kentucky. She was one of the dogs that came from a hoarder. Sophie is the most lovable dog ever! She has come a long way since we brought her home. Now she loves the yard, enjoys laying on the couch just relaxing, thinks she bigger that what she is she will sometimes bark so hard that she bounces backward! Sophie loves when my daughter's dog Rosie comes over they play outside like they have been together forever. She has made a great companion for us and we really think that she appreciates the fact that she is fed, comfortable, warm in the winter cool in the summer, she is getting the life that she deserves. We recently saw a video of the conditions that Sophie lived in, very sad....... but its nice to know that Almost Home is there for these pets in trouble. Sophie is now part of our family and we love her unconditionally, and we are so happy that she is here with us.
THANK YOU ALMOST HOME............. The Renzi Family |
![]() Kero now Vito |
Kero (new name Vito) has found his forever home with us! He's a wonderful additon to our family!! Thank you all so much, The Vivirito Family |

Hey Jude! That is all you have to say and she comes running! Jude has moved right into our lives and made our lives happier and more whole. I know that sounds sort of corny but it is true. We didn't know what was missing until it arrived and arrive it did in the form of this beautiful shiny black dog! She has captured each of our hearts and even the hearts of our NINE cats!! Oh yeah...she completes our lucky number as well. There are three people, 9 cats and one dog...13 in all! We closed on our new house on Oct. 13! Dave lived on the 13th floor in Lincoln Park! So Jude is part of our lucky number! I am a cat person and the thought of adopting a dog was not high on my list. I could just see all the potential problems but the guys wanted a dog so badly that I was willing to try. My only stipulation was that they would have to find a dog that liked cats. I was dreading the transition. I could see the impending attitudes and disasters of having my cats and a dog nipping them and them not coming out of the basement for the rest of their lives. I had dreams at night of the impending disaster. But I love the guys and had to take a chance. So we went on a quest to find this dog. We met all kinds of nice dogs and some really nice people. It was the very last PetSmart and the last stop on our quest. The guys didn't have high hopes at this point. I was trying to be upbeat and optimistic and I said that even though this was the smallest show, they might find the greatest treasure. We met all the dogs and were about to go when Sam spotted Jude-kept away from the other dogs because of doggie agression. It was almost love at first site. AND IT HAS BEEN LOVE EVER SINCE. She has moved into our home and become the center of all our worlds. She is the glue for all of us. Sam loves her, Dave loves her, 9 cats love her....now she is my shadow with every move I make and I REALLY love her. She has such a special magic. I had no idea that one dog could worm her way into my cat loving heart the way that this dog has. I can't imagine life without her. Through this process, we met so many wonderful people that give their heart and time to Almost Home. It has made such an impression on us that we have now devoted our time, my web sites and functions to helping this warm, loving organization. The organization and the dog changed our lives forever. Thanks for giving us such a wonderful member to our bizarre family! YOU are all the BEST for what you do! Fena D'Ottavio and Dave and Sam Corzine |

Our dog Max is the best dog in the world! That's what we tell him everyday! We adopted him in July, he is now 6 months old. We have never owned a dog before, so we really looked around and thoughtabout it for a long time. We could not be happier with Max.He is so sweet and fun loving and loves to go for walks. He has brought so much joy into our home!
The Wirtz Family |
![]() Coleman now Cody |
We adopted Cody almost 6 months ago and he has been a wonderful addition to our family. He loves to play and snuggle and will do anything for a treat. We play catch, take walks and snuggle everyday. Cody is wonderful with our kids and they love him very much. We could not have found a better fit for our family. Thank you to everyone working with these wonderful animals and making the adoptions possible! The McCabe Family |

Two weeks ago we went to the adoption fair in Bloomingdale Il Petsmart to "just see" the cairn we were interested in adopting. While there we met a shy, well behave mix terrier by the name of Denny. We were so impressed by his calmness, and who could resist those eyes! So to make the story short we end up going home with Denny ( now named Duncan) instead of the cairn we were supposed to see. Duncan has by far exceeded our expectation of what a rescue dog is. He is a lovable, smart and well behave dog, who craves for companionship. He is the perfect match for our 7 month old westie. Duncan has found his forever home and we have found our forever dog! We are thankful to the staff of the Almost Home Foundation. All were friendly. Susan was great and understanding! We are grateful for the opportunity to adopt Duncan. In just a couple of weeks , this small little dog has given so much joy to our pack. Welcome home Duncan, welcome home!their forever homes. These great volunteers deserve our heartfelt thanks for their kindness. The Wallenius Family |
|
We adopted Surge in January 2010 and changed his name to Fang after his really large, oversize canine teeth. Fang is one of the sweetest, happiest dogs imaginable. He became best friends with our other dogs like he had grown up with them. He loves to play with the other dogs and if he isn't playing with them, he is sleeping with them, especially after wearing them out. He is extremely affectionate and became a part of our family as soon as he came into the home. He is great with the entire family, but he has picked my daughter as his special person and they are inseparable. Fang is such a great dog, I cannot imagine how anyone could abandon him. The Almost Home Foundation and all their volunteers are to be commended for their compassion and dedication in rescuing the many great dogs and cats who deserve their forever homes. These great volunteers deserve ourheartfelt thanks for their kindness. The Wallenius Family |

Dusty is a little treasure! We have only had him just over a week but we feel he's been part of our family forever. He is a good listener, good with all family members and pets and we all have grown to love him already! Sharon and Almost Home have been great and they gave us all the information we needed! Dusty has found his forever home! Thank you for this sweet boy !Mr and Mrs T Kreml |

I adopted Jack, a Great Dane Pit bull Brindle mix, when he was about 3 months old, his ribs showed and his spine was curved.I went back to look at him 3 times then adopted him.We are best buddies, we go everywhere together. He now weighs about 115 lbs. A little over 3 weeks ago, he became my hero! I was on the first floor laying on my side around 11:00 PM. Jack thought there was something wrong with me, and began a strange bark to my ex on the 3rd floor (I remember none of this). He pushed back the child gate, went to the 3rd floor, took my ex by the sleeve and began leading her to the first floor. Once he got her to the first floor, he came to me and tried to put me on my back. My ex then noticed blood coming from my nose and mouth.I was in ICU with 107 degree temp, left lung collapsed right infected.Ex was told by doctor; she should make arrangements. After 3 weeks in a coma, brain damage from temperature and a stroke. I survived! If Jack had just went to sleep I would not be here today. So now he is not only my pet but my hero whom I love very much.

We adopted Star from you on the 19th of August. We renamed her Lily, and she has been nothing but wonderful. She is loving and sweet, loves attention and greets us at the door when we get home. My fiance and I could not ask for a better pet! Thank you so much. |
|
We adopted Mia and Maya a few months after having to put our 18 year old male to sleep. "The Ladies" have been a constantsource of love, amusement, and company for our family. They are the only cats we've ever know who actually like new people and who stay around when the house fills up. Their antics keep us laughing. They are quite mischievous, enjoy chewing on anything they can, drag vegetables around the house - very uncat like. We adore them. The McAvoy Family |
|
Rerun (Now Locke) is just the sweetest little cat! He is so funny and wonderful- he actually steals my coin change and keeps it in his little cat bed, which is just so endearing. He just loves people and has trouble sleeping if he's not in a lap or on my neck! :) He plays all the time he's not snuggling. I can't imagine a more perfect cat! I have just had the most wonderful experience with the Almost Home Foundation's program. Their wonderful and dedicated volunteers that foster their cats and dogs are just fantastic people who truly love animals. From my experience, I know my little guy is well trained and has been well loved. If only all shelters were like this one! Thank you for the truly memorable experience in adopting my new pet! Flo was adopted by me in August of 2009. She was a rescue from Kentucky. I had lost my Westie of old age in June of 2009, and wanted to find another rescue to love & add to my brood!! Trixie is a wonderful addition to my family. During her first vet visit we learned at some point in her young life she had a broken jaw that was not fixed and her jaw healed crooked. Finding out about her hard life prior to coming into my home made me love her even more!!Recently we found out she is deaf also which explains the difficulty in training her. I have a good friend that is a trainer and she is helping me teach Trixie comands in sign language. Trixie has made huge leaps and bounds working with the sign language training!!! Trixie (Flo) loves her brother Ozzy and sister Lil' Bit. She sleeps in bed with her mommy & daddy under the covers like her sister and loves to lay on your lap all the time. She loves to run in the yard with her sister & brother chasing birds & squirrels. She loves to sun herself on the deck with her sister and loves to be outside in her fenced in yard just enjoying the day!! Thank you Almost Home Foundation--I love you guys!!! Without you, I would not have Trixie (Flo). I can't wait to rescue my next one!!! Love a rescue, it is the most rewarding thing a person can do!!! Trixie (Flo) says "Thank You" too!!! |

In the sping of 2009 my husband and I went to Petsmart looking to adopt a young cat. When we met your volunteers, we asked for a friendly, outgoing, and playful male cat. We were handed a black cat. |
|
We walked in to the PetSmart in Bloomingdale, IL on February 13th with no expectation of getting a new pup. We already have 2 dogs. We were actually there to get them some new food. My mom and I flocked to the adoptable dogs, where I met 10 year old Teddy. She melted my heart instantly. After hearing her unfortunate story (puppy mill, negligent owners), I knew she needed me. I adopted Teddy that day. Teddy was shaved down to her skin because she was so matted and covered in her own filth. She's still working on growing out her hair, but it's getting there!! She was obese when we got her, and I'm so happy to say that she has lost the 5 pounds she needed to. She also was unable to walk or run. We can't even keep up with her anymore!! Teddy used to sleep in a cage every night, now she sleeps on my big comfy bed snuggled right next to me. We've had Teddy for nearly 5 months, and she continues to melt my heart each day.

I adopted my beautiful Saddie the bassett hound (formerly named Silk) exactly one year ago to the day June 12, 2009. She is a very special little girl. She is the little sister of 7 year old Bruno the bassett hound. Saddie is very attached to Bruno, follows him around the house everywhere he goes. Saddie is gentle and a very loving dog. Thank you AHF for finding little Saddie and bringing her to my family.

In March of 2009, I adopted 2 wonderful 1 yo cats from AHF. Their names were Gabe and Sasha and their new names are SAM (capitalized because it is short for Surface to Air Missle) and Diana (named after the goddess of the moon). These little angels have given me so much joy over the short time I have had them. Their foster Mom, Cara, did a fantastic job getting them ready for their permanent home. At first they were scared in their new home. Everything was different! SAM hid under my bed for about 3-4 days. He finally ventured out one night and we bonded very quickly. He is a GREAT pet who loves to play and be petted. He earned his name by flying all over the place in his quest to catch his sister during "crazy time". He was constantly flying through the air!! No, not was, he still does! He is a silly boy. Diana took 2 weeks to finally come out when I was home. She would eat only when I wasn't home. The rest of the time she was camped out under my bed. I had begun to think she wasn't ever going to be happy here when, one morning, I woke up to find her asleep on top of the bed, curled up by my feet. She is a bit of a "scaredy cat", (I happen to think she is just cautious :) Slowly she has come around to be a very loveable, playful, happy cat who LOVES to get her tummy scratched.I cannot be more happy with SAM and Diana than I already am. They give constant love and affection. Their new kitty condo has provided them with hours of playtime and has given me hours of entertainment. They are always playing "King of the Hill" which is hilarious to watch! I am looking forward to many more years of being their Mom.

![]() Gideon now Sawyer |
Hello to all!
I just wanted to thank you for the first of many weeks of joy you've blessed us with. Sawyer (formerly Gideon) is AMAZING! Our cat disagrees but he's coming around too. My husband and I are also interested in helping out with your foundation in the future. Ken in particular was very moved by the dogs we were not able to adopt, and we hope to continue to be a part of AHF in the future.
Thank you again for brightening our lives with this lovely, sweet boy! Thanks especially to Bonnie- she must be an incredible foster mom!

![]() Pyra now Molly |
Our Molly was sent to us by her Uncle Riley by way of AHF. Riley left us for Doggy Heaven in January, but somehow, someway he got us to the right Petsmart at the right time to meet Prya, a yellow lab mix. Her temporary mom Gertie had named her Molly, which seemed perfect – Molly Meyer.Molly has grown to love and trust us, which is a lot since it appears that she had been through some rough times in her past life. She loves our whole family, adults and children alike, but is fearful of larger dogs. She is very intelligent and takes obedience instruction very well. She has completed the basic course and now enrolled in the advanced class. We are so happy that we found AHF and encourage anyone with the willingness and the means to share their home with a dog or cat to get involved. Molly agrees. The Meyer Fanily |
![]() Lohan now Bailey |
For the past 9 years, our daughter was deathly afraid of animals - if one came within a block of her, she would start to panic, tear up and look for a place to hide. A year ago, one of our friends adopted a dog and slowly but surely our daughter began to feel a bit more comfortable-until one day we came back after an event and found the dog cuddled up on her lap! From that point on we began our search for a dog. We knew we wanted to adopt one and happened upon the Almost Home Foundation site and a list of their dogs. We contacted the Temporary mom, Roberta, who by the way was absolutely wonderful-she was so extraordinary and was there for us each step of the way. We went to PetSmart to see our "Lohan" and there was NO WAY we were not walking out without getting her--it was most certainly meant to be! Bailey, our new name for our lovely dog, has been such a blessing to our family, especially our daughter! It is hard to imagine our family without her! Thanks to Almost Home and a special thanks to Roberta The Liss Fanily |
![]() Amethyst now Dagney |
Finding Dagney was definately fate. My husband actually found her online and printed out her picture and gave it to me in my Mother's Day card. Our dog of 12 years past away in January and I never thought it would be so hard to not have a dog around. I missed the companionship a ton. A stay at home Mother, I was pretty lonely. That all changed last weekend. We adopted Dagney and she is the most wonderful girl. She has so much love to give, she gives hugs, kisses and just wants to be by my side. She really likes her new home in fact, she knows exactly where it is and can find it after our walks. She is a little skittish around cars and trucks so I keep her off the main road areas where there is traffic. She loves the neighborhood walks and she has met many new dog friends and she likes them too. She absolutley loves kids which is wonderful since we have a 9 year old. On Dagney's first day here when our son got on the school bus, she followed him onto the bus and I had to carry her off. The kids loved having a dog on the bus. She is very calm and I wish I knew her past history. I'm very proud of her progress! The Skleba

![]() Levon |
We adopted Levon about 2 months ago. We already had a Dachshund Cocker mix, Wiggles, who was 9 years old, so Levon was a great match since he was 10. Wiggles took a couple days to adjust to having another dog in the house, but Levon was the perfect house guest and made the transition very smooth. He has a wonderfully calm and gentle manner. He's an absolute joy to be around and he makes our whole family smile whenever he's in the room. We're very happy Levon came into our lives and that we were able to give him a new home.We are also grateful for the Almost Home Foundation and their volunteers like Cathy who cared forLevon before we fell in love with him. Keep up the great work! The Reedy

| Peggy | I adopted Peggy in December of 2009. She has become a very important part of my family and we all love her immensely! Since her adoption, she has already lost 2 lbs and is well on her way to a healthier weight. Peggy is a very sweet and gentle cat, and has really settled in to her new home. She loves nothing more than to cuddle and take a nap right on my belly! Thank you Irene and Almost Home Foundation, for allowing me to adopt such a perfect cat! She will be loved and have a caring home with me for the rest of her life.

Falcon |
I adopted Falcon in March 2010. Things are going great with him. He's been a Godsend to my 3 y.o. Border Collie mix Cowboy! They get along great & play all day until they wear each other out. Falcon is a sweet easygoing boy that has fit in perfectly to my household. You guys are awesome for rescuing him & other animals from high kill shelters. Please let Vicki his temporary mom know that things are going great with little Falcon. I love the little guy alot! Thanks again!

Kenton |
My son, Jack, and I adopted Kenton last week. I had stopped by the Petsmart the weekend of Easter and was looking around at the dogs available for adoption. As soon as I knelt down next to Kenton he immediately sat in my lap and completely melted my heart. He met Jack during the home visit and seemed almost oblivious to my wild child jumping all over the place. I knew if he could be so mellow around Jack that he would fit into our family perfectly. I picked Kenton up last Saturday and we have been enjoying him ever since. He is a really great dog and he listens so well. He sleeps on the bed with me and snuggles next to me on the couch. He is a fantastic addition to our little family and I am so happy we were able to give him a forever home. Emily & Jack! |
Myra |
My wife and I Adopted Myra 7 months ago, and we couldn't be happier. She is so wonderful, loving and Very protective of my wife. We cannot thank you enough for bringing her into our lives. Please continue your wonderful work. The Pasternock Family |
| Molly | I recently adopted Molly and am in love!! It had been about a year since I lost Snoopy and was unsure if I could go through all that again. I went to a show and Molly ran up to me and I was smitten! She has transitioned into my house and is my best friend! She loves to run with me, go on car rides to do errands and plays well with my cats! Thank you Almost Home for allowing me to love again!! The Vasconcellos Family |
| Ruby | To AHF and my temporary mom, Roberta: Thank you for helping find me a new forever home. I have a playmate who runs faster than I do, but lets me get to the toys first. Sometimes he doesn't want me to cuddle with his/my mom, but then I lick his ears or his face and he relaxes. I have a really big yard, grandkids to play with and treats when I listen and stop eating plants in the yard. Mom says I start doggie school in April after she replaces the leash I ate! Life's good. Ruby The Fapp Family |
Stephanie now Valerie |
I just wanted you to know that back in May of 2008 we adopted a puppy from you Stephanie now named Valerie, and shortly after we moved to MI, being a puppy the move was stressful on her, but has since been the most wonderful dog I have ever owned. She is the happiest dog. She wags her tail constantly, sometimes she wags so hard we think she will fall over, her tail hits both sides with this loud thump thump thump. We are So pleased with her. She has 20 acres to run, and is best friends with my mothers dog. There is no fence here, yet she had no desire to leave her own back yard (we watch her always when she is out). I wanted to personally thank you for allowing us to adopt her, she is precious and wonderful. I would send you a picture but couldnt find a place to upload. again, thank you much! the Grenlin family! |
Finsworth now Phineas |
I really want to thank you for this little angel Finsworth, who we have renamed Phineas, has been a blessing. I cannot believe that he has not been a part of our family for years. It has only been a couple of days and he has "fit in" like he has lived here forever. Thank You! Adele & Savannah |
![]() GeeGee now Hershee |
My partner and I had been talking about adopting a dog for some time. We heard that dogs from the Almost Home Foundation would be at PetSmart one Saturday, and decided to check it out. We fell in love with Hershee immediately! It was pretty chaotic in there with all the dogs and cats, but little Hershee was calm as could be. We found her curled up in a chair next to her temporary mom, Cathy. She was so sweet and gentle and was a beautiful puppy! We adopted her that day, but waited to pick her up until the following day since we were first time "parents" and had NO pet supplies ready. Cathy was kind enough to let us come over to her house to get her. It was great to talk to someone who knew about Hershee's personality and habits. And we certainly loved that she had been well taken care of in a loving home instead of in a shelter prior to us adopting her. We have had Hershee 2 weeks now and are loving every minute of it! She seems happy in her new home and has adapted very well. We would definitely recommend the Almost Home Foundation to anyone looking to adopt a pet!! The Bothell Family |
![]() Leonidas now Leo |
I first saw the picture of Leo on the internet on petfinders.com. We met Leo at his temporary moms Deanne's home. I had to have him as soon as I could. Deanne was great and came and checked our home out the very next day. To our surprise she brought Leo with her and let us have him that day. He has been such a good boy. He is a gentle giant. We are in puppy school together and this big boy now has a loving home where we love him just as much as I believe he loves us. Please if you are thinking about getting a dog save one of these animals and adopt one from a place like Almost Home. Dont support puppy mills. Almost Home was so honest about Leo and told us everything that they new about him. He is now my big buddy. Hopefully you can find your buddy at Almost Home and provide a loving animal a loving home. |
Jag now Ozzy |
We adopted Ozzy in June 2008 after meeting him at an adoption day at Petsmart in Bloomingdale. We went just to see what it was all about, not really intending to find our next pet, especially since my husband would be traveling at the end of the month, but we saw Ozzy and fell in love! He was just what we were looking for - a smaller lab mix only a couple years old, and what sealed the deal was that he matched our cat (they are both black and white)! He also seemed to have a sweet and welcoming temperament. We learned that Ozzy came from a kill shelter in Kentucky, and he wasn't in the best shape initially - patches of hairless skin with rashes, and he was so skinny. We gave him lots of tender loving care, took him to the vet and to basic doggie training, and he has become a wonderful addition to our growing family. I don't know what our life would be without him! We now have a baby girl, and she just adores him! And Ozzy just can't get enough of the cat, he wants to play with her all the time (she doesn't always feel the same, but in general she seems to enjoy the company!). We would absolutely recommend pet adoption you save a dog or cat and find a companion like no other! |
Scoot now Sir Bentley Greystone |
I just wanted to let everyone know that Scoot has started his new life with a new name. Sir Bentley Greystone! So much more fitting for him. I'm sure he was named scoot because of the bad sores on his butt that I'm sure he was scooting on the ground to itch. His first visit to the vet got him on meds for the skin infections, more meds for the ears and we started him on special food to cure his allergies. Its been about 4 days and the improvement is wonderful. What a small price to pay in special food to see him gain such relief. He has been getting a bath every other day to help also and doesn't seem to mind. I guess if you have spent time sitting in your own poop you'll put up with just about anything to be clean! He is already happy in his crate and has only a few accidents in the house....more because of lack on insight on my part and I don't see at as a problem. I have three other dogs and after he has found his place after some straightening out for some bad dog manners (My one dog has only three legs and he expects all dogs to move behind him as to not throw him off balance) and that dog named Noble must get a certain amount of respect from all others except me! Because Sir Bentley is feeling so much better he has begun to hold up that special face of his and his tail now wags proudly instead of tucked under. We are taking it slow due to some swelling on his one paw but he can jump in the car and climb up in my bed for snuggle time when invited. I trimmed his eyelashes that were actually about 1 and 1/2 inches long and blocked his view. I think this will help him see better as that one eye has that catarac......any way just so you know he is on the mend feeling better and even though his is older there is a pretty good chance that he could be around for years and years....the breed can live for 15 years and he may only be eight..... good news for all of us! Thank-you for saving him.....we can't wait to see everyone when his hair grows out and he can strut is stuff. Thanks, The Schramm Family |
![]() Thankful now Buddy |
I have not had the time to write a paragraph for Buddy (We have been calling 'Thankful' Buddy since September) for the AHF success story section. Somehow it's really important for me to do that because I wanted to adopt him and write that since I saw him on the website about 12 or so months ago and every homeless dog deserves a success story.
Looking at him now as a family member makes me overwhelmed with appreciation for AHF and all its volunteers. I wanted to write a quick email expressing our gratitude for AHF, most importantly the person that rescued him from the shelter, his original temporary mom, Kathy, and everyone that did not give up on a dog that most people and even other rescues might otherwise have. He is my new 'old' baby and he makes our family complete. With many thanks, The Basso Family |
![]() Saharrah now Spunky |
Adopted 4/11/09, Saharrah (formally Spunky) took a while to get settled in. Now she enjoys her days either sleeping on my pillow on my bed or sunning herself in the pearch by the front window! Still having a sensetive stomach, I have to watch the food given to her. She enjoys the company of her bro, Onyx (formally Rastas, adopted the same day) until he becomes a pill and she rightfully puts him in his place! She is very much a talker now! She constantly bugs me on the computer by sitting on the mouse and/or keyboard, tugging on the mouse tail (the cord) or just trying to chase the curser across the screen! Though not a lap kitty yet, she very much enjoys the attention and petting that comes at all times!Having these kids around has increased my quality of life for sure! Hopefully they would be able to say the same thing! The Kauthe Family |
![]() Rastas now Onyx |
Adopted 4/11/09, Onyx (formally Rastas), has quickly latched on to his new life here. Either sunning himself on the front window perch or sleeping on the sham on my bed, Onyx has made himself right at home. When he isn't sleeping, he's either bugging his sister, Saharrah (formally Spunky (adopted the same day)), or playing with the numerious cat toys around the house! He has also developed the skill of cooking! Everytime I'm at the counter preparing a meal or snack, he bolts in from the den and jumps up on the counter to see what's being made. If a cabinet door is open, he needs to see what's inside! He figures that the house is his own private domain!Everyday when I come home, he is waiting by the door for me. And everynite I go to bed, he's right there on my shoulder to get his nightly scratch! He is definitely a lap kitty, always jumping on my lap when I sit down to watch tv. Like his sister, he loves to bug me when I'm on the computer!Having these kids around has increased my quality of life for sure! Hopefully they would be able to say the same thing!

![]() Mahlia |
Well, we adopted Mahlia in June of last year, she is a GREAT companion not only to us but to our other rescue Dog-Sadie. She's quite the character, and we love her dearly. She's quite attached to me, and cries when I leave the house, not anymore though when I go to work, but if I go shopping or just head out very quickly. She sits at the window and wines till I come home. LOL
My hubby JUST loves that She loves her sister Sadie, but tends to get a little rough with her, but Sadie when she's had enough puts her in her place. It's SO funny, Sadie will sit on top of her, like OK TIME OUT, and as soon as Mahlia settles down, she gets up off of her. She's doing very well, she's quite a little looker. People LOVE her The Comella Family |
![]() Lloyd Boone now Load |
After losing my dog Buddy due to a heart problem on Nov 20, 2009 I was heartbroken. It seemed that I would never bond with another dog so I decided to help another dog by becoming a temporary home. We got a call from Almost Home of a dog in need who could be taken out of a shelter if they found him a temporary home, so we said "yes". We picked Lloyd up from the PetsMart in Schaumburg on Dec 28th, 2009. He walked right out of there like he had known us all his life, jumped right in our car for the ride home. He had been in a shelter they tell us for about 4 weeks and his time was soon coming to an end. I think he knew it and was very grateful to be in a home, he didn't even mind our cat Max sharing his new digs! There was something special about Lloyd right from the start, he's very loving, freindly with all other dogs/people/kids, has great house manners, housebroken, already knew "sit" and "down", walks great on leash, not a barker, doesn't get on the furniture and is now totally trustworthy out of his crate (unless you leave food within reach). On Jan 2, 2010 we offically adopted Lloyd! I think he really likes his new life with us and his new best buddies nextdoor, Snitzel & Miszu whom we walk with everyday no matter what the weather! I still miss my sweet Buddy but Lloyd is helping my heart not ache so much.
Thank you Almost Home for your part in saving this very special dog! The Comella Family |
![]() Alvis now Schnitzel |
My husband and I wanted to adopt a dog friend to hang out with our 4 year old Jack Russell Terrier, Miszu. We never had two dogs before, so we were unsure what kind of dog would get along with him. Then we saw Schnitzel at a Petsmart adoption show and the next weekend we brought our terrier to meet him. They got along the first minute they met and have become great friends. They play, sleep and eat together. They even chew the same nylabone at the same time. They are inseperable. Schnitzel and Miszu also have a best friend next door who was adopted from Almost Home. His name is Lloyd. Schnitzel has blossomed into a beautiful, sweet boy. We love him very much. We are so thankful to the Almost Home Foundation for saving Schnitzel from the terrible fate that awaited him in a 'kill' shelter. The Busch Family |
![]() Teelou now Lou Lou |
Lou Lou aka Tee Lou was adopted on July 1, 2009. What a joy she has brought to us. She was afraid of everything and it took a while for her to even begin to trust the littlest things such as going for a ride which we are still working on, going for walks(which will get better when the weather gets better. but most of all her trust that we will not hurt her. She loves her petting, baths and most of all her treats when "Grandpa" comes home from work. She has brought new life into this house for not only for Hershie (our Chocalate Lab)who missed our Puddles(who we had to put down due to a stroke) and missed terribly, but she just is sooo loveable..Thank You Almost Home and especially Sharon Lopez for helping us getting LOU LOU.I don't know what I would do without her!!! ![]() Daniel now DJ |
We were going to an adoption show to " Just look" It had only been 2 weeks since we put down our beloved Cairn Terrier, Tiger, who was blind and deaf in one ear. I saw Daniel, now DJ, and knew he was just right. He came to our home on what would have been Tiger's 10th birthday. He's calm and loving. We should have named him CUDDLES because that's all he wants to do. The Woods Family |
![]() Blackie now Mister Socks |
We love our newest... we never had a lab before always golden mixes... what a difference. Socks is a "big kid" who just loves to play and entertain us... it didn't take long to win us over ... we love dogs. It's sad to see though that either he was abused or neglected and some things they never forget. I had surgery in July, just one month after we got SOCKS - he kept me active and busy and outside cause he loves to be out on the deck and putting on a show for all the neighbors. As you can tell I don't know who got the better deal - SOCKS a home or our new baby... The Vance Family |
![]() Bishop |
I am so happy I found Bishop! He is such a loving dog who just wants to be loved. I am thankful for Almost Home. It was a pleasure not a hassle like it was with other organizations. I know Bishop is very happy with his new family. The Ulicny Family |
![]() Anakin now Wile E. |
We adopted Wile e (anakin) back in September, and he has been such a wonderful addition to our home! We had been looking for a dog and when I saw his sweet face on the website I knew I wanted to meet him right away. It took us maybe a whole 10 minutes to decide to adopt him after we met him. He is a perfect match for us! He is so well behaved, he has never chewed up any furniture, never had any accidents in the house, and doesn't bark unless asked to "speak". He is so smart and has learned many tricks, and he loves children. He makes me melt everytime he looks at me with those sweet eyes. He has brought so much happiness to our lives, and I can't imagine being without him. I don't know how anyone could ever give him up but Im so glad we have him now. I am so thankful for wile e's temporary mom who took such great care of him and to the Almost Home Foundation for giving him a second chance! |
![]() Tundra now Carter |
We found Carter at an Almost Home event at our local Petsmart. We knew we wanted to adopt a dog, but we just weren't sure what kind. We met Carter and thought he would be a great addition to our home. He has been so much more than that. We are not even sure how we lived without him! It has been a year and half and he has brought our family together in so many ways. He is a wonderful dog and we are very grateful to Almost Home for bringing him to us! Thank you! |
| Keona now Maya | Maya (formerly Keona) has made a wonderful addition to our home. She fits right in, and quickly made herself a home her. She is so sweet. We went out of town for a couple days and I think every single person we know asked us if they could watch her (what a great problem to have!). She is so friendly to everyone she meets including children and other dogs. We love her so much, and thank you for helping us rescue her! I have attached a couple recent pictures for you to see (sitting on top of the upper couch cushions is her favorite place).

| Oscar and Precious |
Dear Almost Home and our temporary home Miss Kim and Family, We just wanted to wish you a happy new year! We have been in our forever home for three years now, and we have these people trained pretty well. My favorite cheese is Lorraine Swiss from the Jewel deli counter. I still talk all the time and remind you when it is mealtime. I have also taken a liking to sitting in laps. Oscar likes playing the piano at 4 in the morning. We both like sleeping in people beds. Oscar likes to share the pillow with the little boy. He also likes sleeping on all the pink blankies in the little girls room. We like sleeping under the Christmas tree while the lights are on. It is very relaxing. Hope you are all doing well! Let us know how it's going. We appreciate you taking us in. We saw a sad commercial on TV the other day that showed dogs and cats without any home. Love, Oscar and Precious |
![]() Juju now Miller |
We got our Miller girl
back in February of 2009. She was skiddish, unsocialized and not potty
trained at 7-months. She's almost a perfect pup now. She is so sweet, well
behaved, and loves to run and play. She didn't understand fetch or even how
to play when we got her and now she's a tug-a-war and frisbee pro. She was
listed as a terrier-mix but our trainer told us she is likely a plott hound
which seems likely since she looks exactly like a plott hound AND she came to
us from Kentucky! We couldn't have asked for a better dog and appreciate the
work that your foundation does! Miller is a great dog, pet and we are
blessed to have her!
Thanks!

| Jolie now Zorra raxton now Wally |
We adopted Jolie now
Zorra around June of 2009. It's now December. We originally found her
wandering the streets in Elgin and she was taken to a shelter in hopes that
her owners would claim her. We fell in love with her for the little bit of
time she was in our home but we felt if there was someone out looking for her
and was sad they deserved a chance to get their puppy back. We called to try
to locate her and left messages that if no one claimed her we would be
interested in adopting her. Finally 7 days later someone called us & she was
up for adoption because no one claimed her. She is the sweetest puppy in the
world and we are so happy she finally made it home and she is very happy and
spoiled. We don't regret adopting her. My husband who was never too fond of
dogs loves her.

![]() Braxton now Wally |
Just wanted to let you
all know that it was back in August 0f 2008 when my husband and I adopted
(Braxton), now Wally.
He is one tough pup.
Upon adoption, he was recovering from hernia surgery. We had to take him to
the vet to get the staples out and he was a champ. About 2 months later,
something just wasn't right as he started limping and I noticed sores on his
lips and paws. After a few visits to the vet, he was diagnosed with a
disease called blastomycosis. I had never heard of it. The vet made it
sound like a death sentence. Well, we found a vet that was willing to treat
Wally immediately. It was a difficult time, but Wally never gave up. After
10 long months of treatment, Wally is now a Blasto survivor! He is back to
being a bouncing bundle of happiness everywhere he goes. He has made a huge
impact on our family and I am truly grateful to the Almost Home Foundation
and all they do to rescue animals. I would like to also thank Peter Kusch
for being Wally's temporary family and taking such good care of him before we
adopted him. |
![]() Ocho |
We are told that when
they found Ocho, his mother wouldn't feed him or his other eight siblings.
Only three of them survived to bottle feeding and only Ocho survived past it.
They named him Ocho in honor of his siblings. We saw him at an adoption show
and he visited us soon after. He was so happy here that he decided to stay!
He is full of energy, love and "muchos besos" (many kisses)! He loves to romp
around the yard or play soccer with his brother. We love him very much and
glad he has found his forever home with us!
