Nika now Gracie |
I
have been volunteering with Almost Home since its inception, and knew
that I was safe from bringing every dog I met home with me because I
had a "doesn't play well with others" Rottie Mix named Allie
and a very jealous Jack
Russell named Ziggy to come home to. Having these two
amazingly loving, beautiful, intelligent, healthy dogs at home made
leaving the rescue
dogs at the shelter tolerable. Several weeks ago, Allie
began to have trouble breathing so we took her to the vet and were
shocked to be told that she had a malignant tumor in her heart and
probably wouldn't live out the week. To make a long and very
painful story short, she received the treatments that made her more
comfortable but we opted to not prolong her life for our sakes and she
was euthanized on November 7th.
We were all
devastated, but Ziggy was literally heart sick. We knew that we
needed to find a buddy for him quickly so I called AHF and requested a
foster dog ASAP. I believe that we now hold the record for the biggest
foster family failure as,two days after she joined our family, we
asked if we could keep her and Nika (Gracie) is now an official member
of the Brown family. While no dog can ever replace Allie, Gracie
is quickly creating her own place in our hearts. Thanks to AHF for
helping us through a truly difficult time.

Ghost now Chowder

Powder now Cooper
|
I
just wanted to say Thank You to the Almost Home Foundation for
allowing us to adopt our wonderfully cute
doggies, Chowder and Cooper. We had recently lost our dog
who was a loyal family pet for 13 years, and the Almost Home
Foundation filled a void that we felt since our dogs death.
They are a wonderful addition to our family and we have grown to love
them very much. They are now happy, healthy and loved, which is
how every dog should be.

Holly
Sassy
|
We
just wanted to take this opportunity to say how happy we are with our two
kitties, Holly and Sassy that we adopted from Almost Home Foundation in
August, 2007. We previously had two older cats that we had to have put
to sleep over the previous two years. We missed them so much and would
go to shelters, etc., just to visit cats. We stopped in the PetsMart in
Bloomingdale one Saturday when Almost Home was there with cats and dogs for
adoption. As soon as we saw Holly and Sassy we fell in love with them.
They were cuddled up together sleeping. Their Foster Mom, Jennifer,
told us about them and how they are really close – like to eat out of the
same bowl, sleep together, etc. She was so helpful getting us through
the adoption process and showing us what food, toys, treats, etc. Holly and
Sassy liked. We took Holly and Sassy home that day, and they have been
such a joy every day since then! They still eat out of the same bowl,
sleep together and play fight. The cats we had before would play fight
to a certain extent, but they were not sisters and would actually get mad at
each other and hiss. Holly and Sassy never do. They take turns
being the aggressor and the prey. They are so sweet and really seem to
love each other. The first night we brought them home, if one of them
was in a different room from the other one, they would cry and the other one
would come running. Jennifer and Paul always made themselves available
if we had any questions and made the post-adoption process related to getting
the rest of their shots, spaying, microchipping, etc., easy too. We are
so happy we found Holly and Sassy and that Jennifer, through Almost Home
Foundation, raised them so lovingly. Thank you Almost Home and
Jennifer!

Toby now Chewie
|
Toby was adopted in June.
we had actually been looking for a mate for another kitten ( Missy) we were
also planning to adopt. We chose Toby because he was definitely a passive
kitty, and we already had an "alpha male" at home. We also felt
sorry for him-he was the runt of the litter and was so fragile and strange
looking-he was tiny, weighing less than 2#, and his eyes were huge in
comparison to his body. Toby became Chewy, a member of a home with 2 teenage
boys, 3 other felines and a 90# lab.
Chewy was timid for
about a week, sleeping on the shelves in the boys closets, coming out to
visit only occassionaly and taking comfort in his closest kittenmate Missy.
Well it didn't take Chewy long to get comfortable here. He is now a beautiful
boy full of the confidence I didn't think was in him. He enjoys the constant
racing through the house with Missy ( now Leigha) and loves to play with all
sorts of toys, and nontoys that he finds interesting. Our "alpha
male" turns out to be so "non alpha" after all. He has taken
Chewy under his wing and has taught him all sorts of things, including how to
turn on the radio in our bedroom at around 5am daily as our am food wake up
call. (that, I could do without)It is fun watching Chewy imitate our 2 yo
male cat "Milo" Chewy and Milo both sleep with us at night as
well. Chewy is over 5# now, and eats more than any of the other animals-I
don't really know where he puts it all.
Chewy has his own
little adorable personality now, what a gem we got in him! Oh, and the funny
little thing about him, is that he chews his nails when they get too long.
What a great name for a great cat.
Thanks Almost Home
Foundation, for making our home more complete, and for knowing that kittens
need to be adopted in pairs, Chewy and Leigha love their
wrestling/running/rolling around sessions, even our other pets cannot keep up
with them

Leigha
|
Leigha is a real beauty
and now the princess of the pack in our home. We adopted Leigha in June with
another kitten Chewy. Leigha is certainly best friends with Chewy and also a
member of a home with 2 teens, 3 other cats and a dog. Leigha has become the
center of attention to all the other cats-they all seem to constantly groom
her and she seems to love the attention. Once in a while I see her grooming
Chewy, but it's mostly the other cats attending to her-what a life! She is
probably the most independent of our brood and definitely the most verbal.
She certainly lets us know when she wants ( or doesn't want) something. She
has grown tall and sleek and according to the vet, has absolutely enormous
paws for her size. (better for climbing) She loves high places in our home
and seems to love jumping/climbing to the highest heights including the top
of the china cabinet, plant window, top of refrigerator, etc. When we want to
find her, we just look up. She also enjoys pretending to be a bird, when we
hold her, she perches herself up around our necks and sits on our shoulders.
When Leigha is not perched in a high place or being groomed, she can be found
racing around the house with Chewy, chasing light up toys, or looking out the
bay
window. Leigha has a mischevious side to her, seemingly always into
something, always making us laugh. One funny thing about Leigha, is that she
loves cheerios, she looks forward to a few breakfast tidbits with my husband
every morning. What a goofy girl!

Durango now Wally
|
If you scroll down a bit
you will see that we also adopted Billy and Willy from AHF. We adopted
Walter on 6/10/2008. I will always remember that date because
ironically it was the 5 year anniversary of the death of my best friend, my
Shih Tzu, Angie, and now it's Wally's given birthday. He turned a dark
day for me into a happy day. After having such a wonderful experience
adopting Billy and Willy we decided to come back to AHF to adopt a sister for
Billy and Willy.
While meeting with the
female dog's foster mom we met Wally's foster dad. Wally was in the
back getting groomed and we didn't meet him that day, but we did learn a lot
of horrifying details about where he came from. After leaving Petsmart,
Joe and I both look at each other and we knew we wanted to meet Wally, then
Durango.
Wally was one of the
Chihuahua's rescued from a puppy mill. He was in bad shape when he was taken
in. I was told he couldn't walk and he would just drag his back legs. I
don't want to see a puppy mill cage that's so small that a 5 lb Chihuahua
can't stand up or walk around in. He was even described as 'not good
enough’ which translates to me as ‘perfect.’
His wonderful foster
family took him in despite his short comings and we are so happy that we met
his foster dad that day. Poor Wally will soon have almost all his teeth
removed because they are rotten and brown, his legs are now fully
functioning, but he still cannot make stairs, his chest bone is deformed and
sticks out more than it should, it’s obvious he has some psychological
issues and more recently I found a puncture hole in his ear where there was,
no doubt, a tag with a number on it from the puppy mill.
Puppy
mills are truly evil. Wally's life changed when AHF
rescued him, when his foster family took him in and when we adopted him. He
gained a pound (a lot for a 5 lb dog, but he needed it) and looks so healthy.
He is now the prince of his castle (Billy is the king!). Wally eats the
best dog food I could research and find, he sleeps curled up next to me at
night, he has an overflowing toy box, he rides in his doggy car seat to
grandma's and grandpa's (my parents) to be spoiled and to the dog park and
best of all he has his brothers, Billy and Willy, teaching him just how to be
a dog for once in his life.
Little
Walter is his mommy and daddy's baby and a perfect addition to our
family. We love him dearly and just like with Bill and Will, we can’t
imagine life without him. I never did get my little girl... yet ;)

Stratford aka Bandit
A Great Update!

Bandit Now!
|
It has been almost a year
now that we went to Thanksgiving dinner at my brother and sister-in-law's
house who happen to be an Almost Home Foundation Foster home. We walked
in to see this beautiful dog hiding under their kitchen table. Love at first
sight!
It had just been a few
weeks since we had lost our 15 yr old Golden Retreiver to kidney failure, so
we weren't quite sure if we were ready to take a on another pet. Long
story short Bandit has been a part of our family for almost a year now. He is
a very well behaved and quite at home with us now. He loves his back
yard filled with lots of squirrels to "talk" to and chase. He
also loves other dogs and likes to peek through the fence at his neighbor
dogs.
It has been so
rewarding to see this little guy who was rescued from a bad situation - change
from a very timid dog to a confident (yet still cautious) happy dog.
Thank you ALMOST HOME
and your volunteers for the wonderful and dedicated work that you do!
You have added a blessing to our life.

Sizzles now Brother Archie
|
Let me tell you about
Archie (Sizzles). We have had him for almost one month and I cannot
begin to tell you how great he is. He is living in a unique situation.
He was adopted by the priests and brothers who operate Saint
Viator High School. He lives with us in a large apartment on the
top floor of the high school. There are seven of us and he gets LOTS of
attention. We also have over 20 acres for him to go for long runs.
He gets to see a lot of the students and he gets along with everyone.
"Brother" Archie (as we call him) is so happy and is almost beside
himself when we come upstairs after a long day at work. He is so
excited to see everyone. He is working with a private dog trainer right
now who says he is one of the smartest dogs he has worked with. After
just two lessons he has heel and sit down great. We are going to begin
working on "off leash" behavior next. I can't imagine we ever
would have found a dog as perfect as him. Thanks for rescuing him and
taking care of him until we were able to find him.
Sincerely,
The Priests and
Brothers at Saint Viator High School - Arlington
Heights, IL

Wilson
|
I
have 4 dogs – and Wilson gets along with them all great. As a
matter-o-fact the best part is that his strongest bond seems to be with my
oldest dog, Harley. She is a 9 year old Jack
Russell and it seems she has found her youth again with the
introduction of Wilson . They play constantly. And, I mean
constantly – to the point that sometimes we can’t hear the TV over their
play fights.
He
has been a wonderful addition to my brood… he is a huge bed hog though!
But, who can resist that face? His favorite position is to lay his head
right on the pillow with mine.

Maggie
|
As happens daily
for Almost Home, a plea came in begging for help with a litter of
7 kittens who faced a dismal future if left with an overcrowded high-kill
shelter; and if they'd take the one with a bad eye condition,
it was feared the poor tortie might lose it. Almost Home said "Of
course!" The kitten's eye improved with medication and good vet
care. Then her angel walked into Petsmart one day, fell in
love with her and took her home. Her adopter took her to an eye
specialist regularly, treated her with special medication and she is now
looking into a bright future with both eyes fully healthy.
Recently Maggie's former foster received this email from a very proud,
grateful Forever Mom....
You have to hear
this story and I am actually not surprised because we already know how
special Maggie is - she did the most amazing thing last night. I
have no doubt she saved us from a home disaster. You read stories about
"the cat that saved my life" well...
Last night I was in my
office watching the news and tooling around the internet. I have a pet
drinking fountain in there with a bowl that I use to give kitty
treats for everyone before bedtime. She was relentlessly pawing at
the cord! I would push her away and tuck the cord behind it and she'd go
right back at it. I had to push her out of the room and close the
door. Later, I went about my evening doing some chores. I vacuumed my office
and put the treat bowl on top of my office shredder and forgot about it.
Later that evening, Gizmo went in there to munch some treats and knocked the
dish on the floor. Treats and crumbs went everywhere - even in the pet
fountain. It was getting late so I just unplugged it and would wash it out
in the morning. This morning, I took the fountain apart to wash it and
that's when I noticed the cord was all cracked and melted in one spot. It
could have started a fire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I clean that fountain twice a
week and it had never shown signs of any problems. It's not even that old.
Here I thought she was
just doing her weird little scratchy thing. You know how you said she really
goes to town scratching in the kitty litter? Well she actually does that all
over the place. It makes me laugh every time. If you put down food that she
doesn't like, she paws at the floor like she's in the litter box. She
even does this on my leg when she wants to be picked up. Sometimes she even
stands up and reaches high, pawing at the air. I told you it was
funny/weird ;) It's like it's her way of communicating with me. Now
I will always pay attention to what she is telling me. Needless
to say, Maggie got a tearful hugs-and-kisses session this morning and
I said a prayer for her and for you too! Just thinking about how
different things could have been if you didn't take her litter in! The animal
control officer who rescued them, you who took them into your home
and lovingly gave her up to me. She pays me back with love and devotion everyday
but now I just know she had an important job to do in her life. She was
meant to be saved!
God Bless you for everything
you do,
Laurie

Mica
|
I was looking for just
the right dog to adopt: a female, maybe cocker spaniel or boxer, trained,
spayed or neutered and some other characteristics. I had been looking for
maybe 6 months. My previous boss told me about Almost Home Foundation on the
internet and it sounded good. I went on the website and thought I might like
Clover Mae or Josey or Shrimp or maybe even Toasty. But I saw Mica at the
adoption show, the second dog at the PetSmart
and I KNEW he was for me! His face is so adorable. He stood out among all the
dogs and started licking(kissing) me immediately. I took him for a walk and
told the volunteer, Christine, I knew he was for me. It's funny because he
was not at all what I was looking for, but I knew I would find the right dog
when I saw it. Mica is my perfect dog! Diane

BJ
|
We have been a two cat
family for many years. When we lost Squash, our remaining cat Boo Boo did not
seem to be doing very well. He was looking thin and not taking good
care of himself.
My husband has always
loved orange tabbies so I decided to get him one for father's day. We
have had BJ for about a year now. He is a beautiful kitty, but he is
big. Friends and family always comment on how pretty he is. We have
nicknamed him Big Guy because he is three times bigger and heavier then our
other cat. Since we have gotten him our other cat looks great. He has
energy and looks healthy. BJ drives him crazy wanting to play but that
is great for him.
I have to say I have
never know cats to eat some of the things he likes such as potato chips
and croutons of all things! He also begs like a dog! He has been known
to put his paw in a bowl you are eating out of and dig things out of the
recycling. His cabinet opening skills are quite good. BJ is also quite
fond of my plants which are not fairing as well as he is. It was a
difficult adjustment for him. He moved quite a bit in a short time but
he seems happy and is enjoying our family and we are enjoying him.
Thanks for letting us
take him home!

Billy

Willy
|
We adopted Billy and
Willy in December 2007. They are our special little boys and I can't
imagine life without them. They have adapted to life with us well.
The boys allow us to live in THEIR house and sleep in THEIR king bed.
Billy is the leader
and Willy doesn't mind that at all. Billy takes care of Willy so well
and he even licks his face and ears clean everyday. The boys are my
shadow and I take them for visits to my parents, aka grandma and grandpa’s,
every week where they play with their four dogs. It's craziness with
six dogs running around, but in a wonderful way.
The boys also enjoy
going to the dog park VERY often and to the drive in movie theater.
They also look out for the toys I bring them about twice a week. Billy
and Willy are also looking forward to a camping trip soon. These little
guys are the loves of my life and we have Almost Home and their WONDERFUL
foster mom to thank.

Our "Box of Torties"
Story
My roommate Barb had
been an avid petfinder.com
watcher. Every night you could find her at the computer scrolling
through the hundreds of cats and dogs on the website. She knew our pet
was out there waiting for us to find him/her! When we read the
"Box of Torties" story, we knew our search was over.
Immediately Barb sent an e-mail to find out if any of the kittens were still
available for adoption. The next day we were in touch with their foster
mother and after going through the paperwork, we set up a date to pick up two
tortie kittens. Funny.... the two kittens that were still available
were the two kittens we were drawn to in the picture of the four tortie
siblings! Must have been fate! Wrigley and Ozzie (yes... there is the
great divide of baseball loyalty in our household) are doing very well!
Healthy and eating
everything in sight. The two are into anything they can get their
little paws on and love to explore every nook and cranny in the house.
They are actually finding holes in areas we didn't even know existed!
Wrigley realized there was a tiny hole under one of the kitchen cabinets and
squished her body right through it. Thankfully it just led to the
inside of the cabinet. But they are definitely keeping us on our toes!
Adopting the sisters
together was such a blessing. Wrigley and Ozzie do everything together:
eat, sleep, play, purr. They even use the litterbox together! We
couldn't imagine having one without the other.
Thank you Almost Home
Foudnation for your hard work and dedication to helping orphan pets find
their forever home!

Ellie II now Ellie
|
Ellie is a beautiful
white German Sheppard. She is a wonderful addition to the family.
I was sure she would be Daddy's girl but she follows me around as much as
Stella (my other Sheppard). At first it was a bit odd as Ellie had many
of our old dogs mannerisms. A bit spooky. Ellie has adjusted well
to our house and family. This past weekend was the deciding weekend.
My husband and I are avid Drag Racers. We were both concerned she would
be afraid of the loud engines. Not Ellie, she had no hesitations.
That was a big relief since we spend so much time at the track. I just
wanted to thank the Foundation for what it does. I mentioned you to
many people and will continue to do so.

Harry now Hairy
|
Thank You Almost Home for
letting us adopt 'Hairy'. He is a hairy dog :)
I am a foster failure!
But, it isn't my fault! My husband, who did not even want me to start
fostering could not let Hairy go. He absolutely fell in love with him even
though we already had 2 dogs that we adore. Hairy can be found most evenings
on my husbands lap being petted & loved. Last night he even got a bath-by
my husband!
It seems Hairy has
always been with us as he fits right in and gets along with everyone. His now
favorite activity is going for walks-he loves to see the leash come out. I
admit walking 3 dogs is a bit much, but Hairy is probably the best behaved of
all! I really didn't plan this, but sometimes things turn out the way 'THEY
WERE MEANT TO BE'.
Thanks again for ALL
you do in helping innocent animals find their Forever Homes.

My Journey to a home on Sesame Street
It wasn't made by a limo, or a lear jet but by wonderful people who knew I didn't belong in a kill shelter. The word gets out from the great people at the shelters down south,, many shelters up here let them know, who, what, and how many they can take,, for they are all doing the same thing..saving many lives. Miles of riding in a van, lots of money for gas, time consumed is all worth it when we reach the end of the line.. We are vetted, shots if needed , most of us need to be spayed or neutered so the cycle can
stop, and we are taken to a foster home or a safe kennel where our time will never be up.. I was fortunate to get into what they call a foster home, til I get adopted at one of the shows.
Given names and id numbers we get to go to the adoption shows on Saturdays hoping someone sees us and we melt their hearts. It can be a scary place since we are in cages with lots of people and different noises.. sometimes we hear people say that they don't want a certain color, or a certain sex, others say oh I want a kitten or a puppy, or that one is too old.....perhaps if we could talk we would say the same thing about you , " we don't want to live with a blonde " or " I don't want someone who is that short " but we don't, we just want a home.
I have found mine, never a question as to my size, ( I am very petite) my past ( not to sure what it is ), or my color ( which is a med long haired tabby, thank you).. Talk about a welcoming committee when I got to Sesame Street, 4 other cats, ( the 3 boys are push overs, the testy Tortie and I have a few female issues, but that is us gals ) then there are these things called dogs,, Dang I felt like an ant and they were Giraffes,,also they want to smell me, so I set them straight with a hiss or two. But all is well now and I have a home here with Bert, Ernie,Grover ( other AHF Alumni) and Zoe.... the other ones , the leggy things are Johnnie Lee and Melvin....
Thanks to all of you for getting me up here, to a home that will be full of fun , love and always a play mate ..My journey has ended on Sesame Street and I know there is one out there for all the others, perhaps the next one will follow the yellow brick road to their own Oz.....

Suzie now Lily Rose
|
I was really nervous about
adopting my first pet. I had wanted one from the time I was a small child,
but due to allergies in the household (including my own asthma and allergy to
animals), we couldn't get one. It didn't stop me from asking every birthday
and Christmas
when I was a kid. I eventually learned it wasn't going to happen and moved on
to my adult life without a cat. Eventually, however, Kitty happpened into my
life through my sister (who wound up living with me). 6 weeks of suffering
through my self-imposed allergy experiment, I grew accustomed to her enough
to breathe properly and had an instant best friend. I absolutely adored her
(still do), and when my sister moved out nearly 3 years later, I was bummed
about covering all of the rent, but mostly about Kitty leaving. I cried for
days.
I knew I couldn't live alone without a furry feline in my life again. This is
when I found Almost Home. I searched online for organizations for weeks,
looking at hundreds of pictures. The day my sister (and Kitty) moved out, I
went to Petsmart
just to “look”. I spoke with Christine, a foster mom, and told her of my
fears. I knew I couldn't replace Kitty, but knew I wouldn't be happy with one
who hid under beds or wasn't affectionate. She was the type of cat EVERYONE
loved. She turned even the most anti-cat people into fans. I would feel
guilty if I got a cat who wasn't what I expected and I didn't grow to love
her as I do Kitty.
Christine told me about a couple of the cats that were there that day that
seemed to fit what I was looking for. One was Suzie. She was adorable. A tiny
kitty, at just 6lbs, she was at her full adult size (due to giving birth to a
litter when she was under a year). She was cute and curious, and I was
smitten. I was afraid I was being rash (she was the only cat I looked at), so
I decided to sleep on it. That night, I called and set up a visit with Suzie
the next day. I couldn't stop thinking about her.
The next day, before heading over to Christine's, I purchased a small pink
carrier (with bows!) and an array of cat items. I knew the decision had
already been made. When I arrived, I visited with her a little and about an
hour later, happily took her home.
I named her Lily Rose. I now refer to her as Lily Bean (who knows why, it
just stuck). Though she was really fearful at first and hid under my bed for
nearly a month, eventually she poked her head out and hopped up on my bed. I
was SO happy when she finally did, as I was worried maybe she didn't like me
or was the “under the bed” cat I feared. I would give my friends daily
Lily updates, so encouraged by ANY baby steps.
After the first month, she quickly warmed up. Since then, we have become
great buds and I wouldn't trade her for anything (yes, allergy doc, I will do
shots, but I will NOT give up my cat!). She greets me whenever I get home and
we “chat” at night and at meal times. I discovered she rolls around when
she's happy or content (I have never seen a cat do this and it's adorable-
she does it frequently), she will steal food right off my plate if I am not
careful, she is happiest when she is with me, adores sleeping with me, and
her favorite toys are the makeup sponges left behind by her cousin, Kitty.
She is what I call a “sponge enthusiast” and eagerly drops it in my lap
so we can play rounds of fetch nightly (yes, we seem to attract the girlie
cats in this family!).
I love my little Lily Bean like crazy and I'm happy to say I do not regret
coming to Almost Home. Thank you SO much for taking such good care of her and
for matching us up. She truly is a joy to me!
Sincerely,
Michelle Nicolet

Kotter
|
Kotter was apparently rescued by Almost Home from
a kill shelter. AHF called and asked me to foster, and little 8 mo. old
Kotter came up to me and sat right on my lap. I took Kotter home that
day. I "failed" as a foster because after only 1 week, I knew I had to
keep the little guy. He is just so smart, loving, and a great pet.
His favorite thing is to lay in bed on his back, with his head on my
shoulder. I never thought I'd have a border collie mix as I've always
wanted a silky terrier, but Kotter was just too precious to resist!
Thank you AHF for giving me the opportunity to get to know this wonderful
puppy, and allowing me to add him to our family.

Buck

Allie
|
Our daughter
saw Buck & Allie and absolutely fell in love with them! I am so thankful
she did not have to experience our sad, empty home after our GSP (german
Shorthair Pointer) Emmie died. We only lasted 10 days without her before
Allie
and Buck came into our lives.
I didn't know how it would be with 2 dogs, but
it is so fun to watch them play together in the yard and sleep on couches and
play all over the house together. Allie is still a bit shy but does cuddle up
with me. Buck is fun and my son has become very fond of him.
Hopefully Allie will warm up. I worry since
she still cowers when the boys talk to her. But they are so lovable. I am
thankful we could adopt them together. Thank you and Gidget for taking such
great care of them while you had them.
You do such a wonderful service to all the
animals and Thank God for all of you!
Sincerely,

Molly now Sabrina
|
Two weeks ago
my wife saw Molly at an adoption show in Schaumburg. She immediately fell in
love with her, as she looks just like a cat we lost this last Christmas after
15 years due to kidney failure. She came home and told me about Molly.
After locating her last weekend in the care of her wonderful foster parents,
Harry & Sabrina, we met with them and adopted her on the spot
She is a wonderful, sweet 15 month old female who not only looks like our
beloved Bonita, but also exhibits many of her traits and mannerisms. She fit
in immediately with our other cats and is such a joy!
We could not be more pleased with our new pet and the terrific people at
Almost Home. We highly recommend them.

We have just celebrated our one year Anniversary
with Clyde, the Beagle. He is such a great companion and we are so happy He
chose us to be his new family. We love him very much and we think he likes us
too!!!!!
Thank you, Almost Home Foundation, for the
work you do,

Brandy Snifter now Annie
|
I don't even know where to begin when writing
about our little Annie (you guys named her Brandy Snifter) so we tried to
pick a name as close to Brandy as possible!
We lost our last dog Max to Cancer in December and were devastated. He
was only 6 and we never thought we'd be looking for a new dog so soon.
He was a pet store dog and even though he was the coolest Alaskan Malamute
ever, we knew that we'd never give business to a pet store or puppy mill
again. We wanted to adopt a dog. Our house felt so empty without
him so we started looking online for a local rescue and came across Brandy.
We emailed Lyn at the foster home and went to see Brandy the next day.
Lyn let her come home with us that night for a 2 week trial. This is
where the adventure began!
Brandy had been dumped off at a kill shelter before Almost Home rescued her.
She was and is the sweetest puppy ever, so submissive and scared of the
world. Whoever her previous owner was must have been horrible to her
because she was afraid of everything when we got her, especially men, going
out in the dark, and the leash. The first week we had her was awful!
She peed everywhere and we couldn't even try to correct her because if you
walked toward her, she'd pee again. We were so upset and frustrated and
called Lyn with our concerns. She calmed us down and we decided to take
it a day at a time. Thank GOD we did not give her back and stuck it
out. She is the most wonderful, sweet family dog ever! I am so
happy and thankful that we didn't give up on her when things were so bad.
She's made leaps and bounds and is going to be the most wonderful dog!
We love her to death. Every day, she is more and more confident.
When I look back at how much she's changed over the last month, I see how
really depressed and scared she was when we got her. She's almost fully
housetrained with only an occasional accident. There is no more nervous
trickling. When a new person comes over, we just tell them to give her
a few minutes and then she's fine. She still hates the car and is
afraid of the leash but once you get it on her, she loves walks. When
it snowed last week, we all went out to build a snowman and she was running
all over the yard. She sticks around and never runs off. We took
her to our lake house in Wis. ice fishing and she was running all over the
lake on the snow all day and had the time of her life. It's great that
she just hangs out and doesn't run off. And she LOVES to chase birds
and squirrels out in the yard. She's become quite the queen around
here! We got her a bunch of dog toys and you can only imagine how much fun
she is having! I don't think she ever had a toy at her old home because she
didn't even know what they were! You should see the mess she makes
tearing them all up. She follows us all over the house and we love it.
Thank you Almost Home for doing such good work! We appreciate it so
much and Annie does too!

Rocket
|
“There’s just something
missing” is what I would say to my husband. We have been married
twenty-eight years and for twenty-two of those years, we’ve had a dog in
our lives. After we lost our last Irish Setter, my husband said, “No
more. I cannot lose another dog.” But then as time went by, and
our daughter kept bugging us, we were finally ready.
After searching the web, we
came across the Almost Home Foundation. We decided to look for a Golden
Retriever. As we scrolled down the pictures, we came across Rocket.
My husband was immediately sure that he was the one for us. Then we
read about him.
“When
he came to Almost Home we soon learned that he was definitely a more dominant
dog who did not always want to listen to people. So Rocket had to go to live
with a trainer who worked with him.
A lot of dogs are fine without a firm owner, but not Rocket.
Because
of his natural dominance he needs someone who is more than a loving owner; he
needs a strong pack leader who will take charge at all times, so Rocket can
be a follower.”
It was evident that Rocket
could not go to a home with small children or people who could not handle his
dominance. Since we had some experience in confirmation and obedience
with large dogs, we didn’t think he would be a problem. So when we
contacted Chuck Hanson at the foundation, he was very encouraging and
helpful. I said to my husband, “This is fate. This dog is meant
for us.” We went to see Rocket at his foster home. I was a bit
unsure about him after learning about his growling problem. But we
decided to take him for the 2 week trial period. We had his former
trainer Kim Bobka from Teacher’s Pet K-9 School come to the house to help
us.
My husband easily became the “alpha male” but I had some fears.
Rocket was full of energy, playful, extremely smart, and so loving and
affectionate but that growling really made me unsure of our choice.
Then I thought about his background and wondered what he had been through in
his 2½ years and who would take him if not us. With time, patience,
and learning how to work with him, he has come a long way…and is now a part
of our family.
Thank you Almost Home
Foundation for all that you do.

Valentina now Domino
|
An AHF Dog Team member, Linda, emailed me about a
dog coming from a Rockford kill-shelter, and could I meet her? Yup, and
the rest is history. Domino is the sweetest 18 mo. Border/Cocker mix I
have ever seen. Smart, quiet, gentle and will probably shake her butt
off B4 she goes "Over the Rainbow Bridge". Perfect dog for me; retired,
works part-time in the summer, but needed to have a good friend to come home
to and take outside. Her BIG brown eyes and warm, sweet nature is what
Webster probably wrote about in his dictionary under; Good Dog!
She get's her surgery in February and won't
have to go through having more puppies, because whomever took her to the "kill-place"
never knew her warmth and total acceptance. She loves to play with
other dogs and is somewhat dominate - OK, that works. Someone has to
be.
IDomino is a Cocker Spaniel with a white chest
and an inch or so of "milk" white on her muzzle. Oh, and the name,
Domino came from the black freckles in that white muzzle. No, not after
the pizza place!

Little Champ
|
We adopted Little Champ from Almost Home
Foundation in October 2007. After a rough patch or two at the
beginning, we have found him to be the most wonderful and loving little dog!
Kelly from Almost Home was so supportive to us throughout the adoption
process and we are grateful for having the chance to adopt such a great
canine friend. Champ is healthy and happy, and he loves to play and go
for a jog. Thank you, Almost Home Foundation, for rescuing Champ and
for recognizing that he deserved a chance to survive.

Skippy now Tater
Joy now Tessy
|
Tessy and Tater are 8 months old now and we
couldn't be happier. They are kind little kitties (actually, not so
little anymore) who are adored by my family, especially my 4 and 6 year old
daughters. They meet us at the door, follow us everywhere and
tolerate little hands loving them alot!!! They will sit in a stroller
with absolutely no complaint and get strolled around the house! They
sleep in our beds and don't wake us up until we get up and they know it is
special treat time.
We were a family of four but are now a family
of six with our best little kitties in the world.
Thank you Almost Home!!

Addison
|
I should have known Addison was destined to be
mine the day I brought her home to foster her. She was just one month old and
was found orphaned living behind a convenience store on a busy intersection
and Almost Home stepped in to save her. She needed to be one month older, one
and a half pounds bigger, and eating on her own to go to an adoption show.
While Addison was busy growing and playing with my other foster kittens, my
own cat Bunkie took a liking to her.
Bunkie has always been a skiddish little girl who never played much or
allowed another cat to get too close to her. But here she was spending lots
of time with this little kitten... tossing toys around with her, sleeping in
the window with her, eating breakfast with her. After Addison was old enough
to go to the shows, many people liked her but no home came around... this
went on for a few months. Bunkie would be so glad to see her buddy when she
came home from a show. Finally I knew what the right thing to do was, and I
adopted Addison as my own.
Addison has grown into a lovely young lady... not only is she gorgeous but
she is such a joy to have around. She has so much spunk and personality. She
is healthy and happy, with so much thanks to Almost Home for rescuing her and
giving her the chance to live the life of a beloved family member and not of
a starving, orphaned stray. Little did I know when I brought home that tiny
little bundle of fuzz that my Bunkie would have picked out her very own
sister, still always playing together, eating breakfast together, and taking
naps together.
Thank you for giving Addison the life she has.
I know I can't imagine my own life without my two girls.

Kramer now Soco
|
On July 28th I adopted a 10 year old male cat
named Kramer, he has been renamed Soco and is wonderful. He is a lap cat and
loves attention. The picture shows him with his friends Katie and Emma. His
favorite game is "hide and seek" and Katie and Emma love finding
him and playing with him. He is great with the girls and is truly a joy.
|

Bauer
|
We adopted Bauer in February 2007 and he is an
adoption success story! We don't know why someone let him go - but
we're so glad we found him. He came to us completely house trained and
mostly well behaved. We are still working on helping him to settle down when
someone is at the door. Our three boys absolutely love having him as a
playmate and companion and he is so patient with them. He is like a 95 lb
teddy bear!
We love having him in our family, and we're so
glad we adopted from Almost Home Foundation. Thank you!
|

Travis
|
Travis is the best dog in the world! When we
first saw him, we wanted him! But another family adopted him, then
developed allergies so we were meant to have him. From the first moment
he walked into our house, he was home. He is the family dog, loves the
cats and he and our puggle Patsy were instant best friends. Travis
follows Patsy everywhere, and does everything she does! They share toys, play
together and sleep curled up together.
Thank you to Almost Home Foundation for
Travis!

Faith now Moey
|
Moey has been with us now almost 2 mos. She
truly is a good girl and very much my dog. She likes the rest of the
family (especially our daughter) but is still a little leery of my husband.
He's working to gain her trust and with love and patience we're confident she
will become his dog as well. Like her friend Stratford aka Bandit, she
too was very skittish and still is afraid of any sudden loud noises.
She's listens well and we continue to work on obedience training. She
enjoys playing with her new sister and LOVES her cushy beds, but I think her
favorite thing is to run and chase away the squirrels in the yard! A
big thank-you to Wendy (her foster mom) and her daughter for doing such a
good job acclimating her to "home life". Wendy was right when she told
us "She's a great dog". Thank you, Almost Home for saving our girl.

Brendon now Cooper
|
I adopted Brendon on December 15th. We have
since changed his name to Cooper and he seems ok with it!!!! Cooper had
no trouble whatsoever adjusting to his new environment but his sister cats,
Rachel and Tana had a slight issue with the new guy. Cooper freely took
over all the toys and kitty tent and had a blast. Rachel was not quite
as excited about this but has gotten over it. Rachel and Cooper play
very nicely together and our older girl, Tana, just kind of watches the two.
While not as active as the other two, Tana is just fine being Cooper’s
sleeping buddy.
Thanks so much for Cooper. He is a
wonderful little guy and we love him very much.

Hope
Oskar
|
We adopted Oskar and Hope and are very, very
happy!! We had decided to just take a look and maybe just adopt one
kitten at first, but when we went to see them, we fell in love with both of
them, so we ended up adopting both.
Oskar is black/white and Hope is Grey and they
are adorable. We already have one cat at home and a dog and when we
brought Oskar & Hope home, it was a bit crazy. We slowly introduced
the two little ones with our dog and cat and at first, Oskar did not get
along with our dog, but got along with our cat and Hope did not get along
with our cat, but got along with our dog. It was very funny, but now,
they get along great.
Oskar is the trouble maker and gets into
everything. He doesn't like to be picked up much, but when he wants to
cuddle, HE WILL CUDDLE!!!! He also likes to join me while I'm working
and read with me...he literally sits & looks at the screen on the pc!
Hope on the other hand is he most affectionate kitten I've ever had.
She is like a baby and loves to be held. She's also like a little
pup...when she smells food, she comes around trying to see what it is!
They're both very cute & we love them.
Thank you to Almost Home's foster mom Sabrina for these wonderful little
guys!!
Thanks,

Monique
|
We weren't looking for another dog, until we saw the photo of
Monique. She looked so much like a beloved dog we had lost to
congestive heart failure a few months before. We knew we couldn't replace him,
but we could honor his life by taking another dog into our lives.
Monique came to us on a two-week trial, but we could not have let her go
from the minute she came into our home. What a joy she is--affectionate,
lively and altogether a delight! Our thanks to Almost Home Foundation
for finding and rescuing her and to her foster "mom" for
keeping her until we knew she needed us--and we needed her!

Paddy
|
We adopted Paddy from Almost Home in August 2007. When we
first saw his cute little face, we knew we had to meet him. Once we did
meet him, we were in love! His foster mom told us that Paddy came from
a high kill shelter and was in terrible condition – you could see
his bones and he was just a scared little guy. She helped him fatten up
and trust again. Then, lovingly let him go to his forever home in
Geneva.
Once we got Paddy home, he was just a bundle of joy and mellow all at
the same time. He has put up with a curious cat from day one and he’s
slowly winning the cat over. And, everyone who meets him falls in
love with his loving demeanor and sweet heart.
In the late summer, Paddy loved going on lots of walks on the Prairie
Path and down by the Fox River and playing with his squeaky ball in the
yard with his new favorite buddy, his adopted dad, Steve. He loved
riding in truck and loves being a great companion around town. He took
naps on the couch a lot too when he was inside to rest, only to wake up
to give lots of kisses and wag his tail wildly with excitement!
In the fall, Paddy had so much fun playing in the leaves. He dashed
from one leaf pile to the next like it was the greatest thing in the
world to dive in and roll around!
Now that its winter, Paddy thinks the snow is fun to dig down in and
get his nose full of snow. He still looks at us with his cute little
eyes (right after he just came inside) as if to say, I’m ready to go
outside to play again. After a long day of relaxing with the cat and
playing outside with his adopted parents, Paddy loves to curl up on the
couch to watch T.V. or on his doggie bed for a nice, long night’s sleep.
This Christmas, we’re blessed with our favorite gift of 2007 –
Paddy. We find such joy in giving him his loving forever home and can’t
wait for the many more memories with him to come.

J Lo now Ethel Rose
|
J Lo was a very special girl in foster for a long
time. She was adopted a little over a year ago now by a wonderful woman
named Gail, who's been patient and understanding of J Lo's
shyness. Gail renamed her Ethel Rose, and sends me pictures and updates
regularly to let me know all the wonderful and goofy things she's enjoying
with her.
Ethel Rose's original "success"
story was limited because of her shy tendencies - but she has blossomed over the
last year in her new, loving home.
Ethel Rose is such a shining example
of how it's so true that there's a home for every single animal needing one,
that we just have to find the right one. It's obvious that both of them
enjoy each other's company immensely. Isn't is great?!
A big thank you to Gail for the patience and
love she has given Ethel Rose!

Ethel Rose just wanted me to forward these pictures so you can see what
she's been up to.... She's become so very helpful, whether I'm trying to eat pretzels, put up
Christmas decorations,
etc....
How far she has come in a year!

Twinky aka Mandi
|
We lost our beloved 13 year old beagle
Dragon in August. I swore I would never get another dog. Well two months
later I saw Twinky's picture on the Almost Home website. After seeing her
face and reading her story - Done deal we wanted her. Her name is now
Mandi. I thought she deserved her own special name. Mandi was fostered by
Corky and her husband. Corky told me Mandi was very depressed because she
had had a litter of puppies and someone just dumped her.
The first week Mandi was with us I noticed
she never barked. She just kind of stayed on the couch. After the second
week I began to clicker train her to come when called and after the third
try she did it. Her tail wagged more and she seemed to be responding to
our love and attention. By the third week she sat on command and was
becoming very curious about her new home. She has became very attached to
me and followed all over the house. She is very well behaved. One day
after her third week with us I went out shopping and when I returned I
heard this glorious bark coming from inside the house. She is not a barker
per say, but on occasion does let us know she can do it.
After four weeks with us she was shaking
her paw and the tail wagged more and more. I still could not understand
why someone would dump her, but I think St. Francis meant for her to be
with us. I told Mandi that she was now in her Forever Home and that as
long as I am around no one would ever hurt her. She just looked at me with
those soulful eyes.
Everyone that meets Mandi falls in love with her. She
is great with children, loves to walk and now points at squirrels in the
yard. Mandi is the love of my life. I know that when I come home she will
be there with a wagging tail. We still miss Dragon and she was special in
her own way, but Mandi has brought such joy to our lives and is a very
special pup. I thank her foster mom Corky for all her love and support of
Mandi before we adopted her. Corky and her husband also are very special
because they give all of these rescue dogs a home until they are
adopted.
Thank you to Almost Home Foundation for
their love and work with animals.

Angel Baby
Fluffers
|
Thank you everyone for bringing us Angel Baby and Fluffers!!!
These two are AWESOME!!! Angel baby is just that. The door bell
rings, he goes under a blanket, then he peaks his nose out to see who has
come in the home. We brought home some little kittens to foster for
Almost Home and he knocked all my paperwork off my desk, I picked it up
and put it back on my desk, yep he knocks it off. Big baby. So every
day we have "Angel Time" We go lay on his blanket and watch a
movie. Yes, I have created a spolied baby. I love it.
Fluffers is a sweet little girl. She follows me everywhere...until my
husband comes home and she is all about Harry. Harry starts a fire
every night so Fluffers can sit up in her cat tree and sleep in front of
the fire. It could be 75 degrees out, there is a fire. lol
They have their own fuzzy blankets, on our King bed. No way are they
sleeping on the floor. They are right with us. The are such a
wonderful addition to our family.
I could go on and on about these two. We love them and they will
always be with us..........their forever home.
Thank you Claire, Paul and Deanne for our precious family members.

Stratford aka Bandit
|
Just wanted to let you know that Stratford isn't
almost home he IS HOME! We have renamed him Bandit and he is
settling in nicely in his new home with us. He is still a little
skittish but after 2 weeks we can leave a room now without him crying.
He is a couch potato inside but full of energy outside. He loves to go
out and run and dig in the snow. Today he even posed for the family
Christmas Card picture which I am attaching for you.
Thanks Almost Home for rescuing such a wonderful
little guy!

Fiona Now Kaia
|
Our baby girl is doing great! She is growing
up to be a wonderful dog and we absolutely adore her!
She's SO smart, we've been having a great time taking her to puppy class, she
just "graduated" last week. We are half way through the
intermediate training class at Petsmart. We plan on keeping up with
advanced training and probably even try out some agility training since she is
so bright and the trainer says it's really fun for dogs.
She's been really good with the potty training, she has not made any mistakes
or anything, the only time was when her tummy was upset. So, she's been
fully house broken at about 4 months old.
We've been taking her to the family's house where she has fun with her new
friend, their yellow lab. They get along great and she helps Kaia
understand which behaviors are acceptable and which are not, so it's been
helping us with her training.
We get outside with her as much as possible. During the summer I was
roller blading with her on different paths, just taking it easy for now since
she's only a puppy, but I can tell this activity is going to be a part of our
lives for good. Kaia loves it, she get's so excited when we are going
somewhere.
I'm so happy we found her through Almost Home, and I want you to know how much
we love her and think that she's very content and happy here with us!
Things have gone so well that we'd like to consider adopting another dog
within a year or so so we can share our home with another wonderful pet.
It's so wonderful to see so many other success stories and know that other AHF
dogs (and cats) have found happy homes too. Keep up the great work AHF!

Oreo
|
Oreo is a pit bull/boxer mix and he is the
greatest, most loving dog around. He's become a true member of our family. In
fact, he get's to sleep in one of our beds and has the run of the house. He's
a great watch dog. Barks at the doorbell and even barks when the doorbell is
on TV. I want to thank the Almost Home Foundation for our newest family
member. He's the greatest!

Jake and Elwood are a
double sucess story for you. They were adopted as kittens and after a
year their people had to move out of the country and did not want to subject
them to the required quarentine. They started out as Elvis and Elroy,
then Ali and Vali and are now Jake and Elwood.
Our cat Emerson, who was
almost 15 years old passed away in June of 07. We knew he could not be
"replaced". On a whim I was surfing the internet on the 4th
of July. We thought maybe it would be awhile before we got any new
cats. We didn't really want kittens, and we perferred declawed... we
wanted 2 cats together, and we wanted boys. Could take us years to
find that..... and there they were!
I inquired after Ali
and Vali, and figured I would hear in a few days that they were already
adopted... but I got an e-mail that day from Irene and Bob. They were
available and we could come and see them anytime.
Our Emmo was a little Tonkinese I
adopted in 1994 of about 6 pounds. These two are about 12
pounds a piece. They are mackeral tabbies, and as Irene put it
" characters". They have not replaced our Emmo... but
they have made it easier for us to live without him. They make us
laugh, they lower our blood pressure, they are just the best. We are
so lucky! And we think they like us too! What more could we ask
for?
We so appreciate what you
all do. Keep it up and Bless you all!

BowBow now Lucky
|
To All of our Friends at Almost Home! Lucky
adopted us on December 29, 2006. Our neighbor De is a volunteer for AHF &
Lucky peeked around the corner in her car on the way home from a transport
& he stole our hearts! Since then, he got to his proper weight (he
was about 35% under), his coat is soft & shiny, & his eyes give us
more love than we have ever known! This little man completed our family,
joining our other Boston, Wishbone. The 2 are perfect for each other are never
apart. We could not be happier that he came into our lives!!

Virginia now Mambo
|
Mambo came to be part of our family during the
long and difficult healing process from the loss our much loved cat Bailey. We
didn't think we could ever love another cat the same way but Mambo has more
than proved us all wrong. Every day she finds a new way to "dance"
into our hearts and we could not love her more. She is a ball of energy and a
complete klutz who is sure to brighten even the gloomiest day. We can’t
thank her foster mom enough for taking great care of such a wonderful little
girl. While we will never forget Bailey, we're sure that she would approve of
her new little sister.
Thank you Almost Home Foundation!

Halle
|
Halle was 8 weeks old when I found her on Petfinder.com.
It was love at first sight! I contacted Almost Home right away and met them at
the adoption event at Petsmart. She was one of 8 puppies from Sasha. I saw
Halle for the first time and had to have her. She has been with us since May,
the day before Mother's day . She is my baby and I can't
imagine life without her. We've been through training classes through Petsmart
and she recently graduated intermediate class. She loves going for walks,
going to the dog park, swimming in her kiddie pool and going to the dog beach.
We'd like to get together with her brothers and sisters if they are around
:)
Thank you for such a great pet!
Roberta Mecklenburg
Halle loves Halloween and dressing up with her
sister Colleen!

Carolyn now Milly
|
We've had Milly for only a few weeks now and she's absolutely
wonderful. She's the sweetest little girl in the world. She's a
daddy's girl and she knows mommy spoils her rotten, but Grandma is even
worse at spoiling. Milly is a very smart little girl, she understands
simple commands, and is very obedient. She gets a little too excited
during walks but we're working on it, and she's getting better with each
walk. Milly is very light with her paws, Grandma is frail because of
medical condition, and Milly knew right away not to jump on Grandma. She
keeps Grandma company during the day while, we're away at work and
school, so she's brought Grandma lots of happiness. Everyday we come home
she's waiting for us at the door, as soon as we walk through the door
there are tons of hugs and kisses to be given. We can't tell you how
much we love her, all she has to do is look at you with her adorable
little eyes and she's got you. Her tail never stops, she's always happy!!!!
We love our little girl and we're so blessed we found her and she
found us.
Thanks,

Reese now Lexi
|
I adopted Lexi (Reese) over a year ago now. She is
truly a special little girl. She is more loving than any other cat I have ever
seen. Living in a condo building, she has made friends with all my neighbors,
and is the talk of the building. Some of my neighbors are more dog people than
cat people, however say they would get a cat if they could find one just like
Lexi.
Lexi has a cat tree she sits in and waits for
me to come home from work everyday, and is waiting by the door when I reach my
unit. She just loves to sleep in bed with me at night, and will lay next to me
with her head on the pillow.
After losing my cat of 16 years, I did
not think I was ready for a new cat, but was so lucky to find Lexi. I would
not trade Lexi for the world.

Dino now Henry
|
I found Henry (Dino) during my long search to find the right dog. I was casually looking on-line and saw him. I drove to three
different Petsmarts to find him and the minute I did he got all excited and climbed into my lab. He has been sitting there since! Henry has very
typical Jack and very typical Chi characteristics. He is protective but not mean. He is cautious but playful. He loves to cuddle but has yet to
really learn how to play with toys. I am very grateful to Almost Home and cannot wait to adopt Henry a friend!

doing beautifully and we couldn't be happier with him. He's such a sweet, boy.
When my husband gets home from work Duke greets him at the door with a smile,
wagging tail & lots of happy wiggling. He has instantly became a part of
the family, he has a lot of love to give to everyone and we have to him, he is
a joy to play with and to take for a walk. Duke is an extraordinary dog. And we
know that he will make a wonderful addition to our family! THANK YOU !!!!!

adopted Reno from Almost home a year ago on August 15th 2006. I just wanted to
let you know that he is a wonderful asset to our family. My husband and I love
him very much. His personality has really come out this past year and we enjoy
all of his antics and play time. He tends to be very chatty in the morning and
he is the only dog I know that can yawn all day long. He is a busy boy and he
goes to doggie day care every Saturday so that he can play with all his friends
and enjoy the "Pool". When he gets up on Saturday he cant wait to get in the
car and dont even mention the word "PlayDay"
Thank
you almost home for bringing Reno into our lives. We tell everyone the benefits
of adoption and always tell them about Almost Home. We look forward to a long
happy life with Reno. He's a wonderful dog.
Regards,
Annie Mistretta

I
want to share my story with you. My name is Hooch and I’m two years old. I
was a stray dog when I was found and brought into the shelter. I was very
skinny, pretty active and somewhat jumpy so the shelter wasn’t quite sure
what to do with me. The Almost Home Foundation came and took a look at me and
saw past my energy and knew that one day I could be someone family’s pet.
They saw that after I had met a person all I wanted to do was please them and
love them. Even though there was no foster home available for me, they went
ahead and told the shelter that they would find me a good home.
Lucky
for me, a human family with three older children, lots of love to give and
patience fell in love with me and took me home. They really wanted me to know
where my home was so they hired a trainer to train the children and I soon
became their family pet. It took a little time for me to trust humans, but my
family never gave up on me and after a few months I knew I could trust them.
Now, I’m learning how to play nicely with other dogs, walk next to my family
without a leash, and trying to remember not to jump when I’m really excited.
My family loves to camp and I’ve become so well behaved in the camper that
next time they go camping I get to go too.
For anyone thinking of adopting a rescued dog, please know that with a little
time, consistent rules and lots of love any dog can become your family pet.
Remember, dogs just want to please you and love you. I’m sure glad someone
gave me that chance!!

Bandit now Barnaby

We
adopted Barnaby from Almost Home in January. When he showed up at our house
("let's just meet him and see what happens"), I saw his big adorable
eyes through the glass door and I knew I couldn't say no. He's learned all
kinds of things since then: he knows that whenever we open the freezer, there's
an ice treat to be had; he knows that he is Deputy Overseer of taking out the
trash; and that any putting-on of shoes means there may be a walk at hand! He
loves cuddling and chewing on his Kong. He is a constant source of joy (and
amusement.) Thanks so much for rescuing him and bringing him into our lives! -- Maureen
