 Success Stories

Almost Home Foundation is very proud of the adoption efforts of our volunteers. We try to keep in touch with all our new adoption homes and encourage them to visit us at the adoption shows!

Everyone likes a "happily ever after" story.  Below are some happy endings sent to us about their newly adopted pet!

We encourage anyone adopting one of our animals to email  us about their happy experience with adopting one of Almost Home Foundation's animals!  To send us your Success Story - please click here.

Saharrah now Spunky
Adopted 4/11/09, Saharrah (formally Spunky) took a while to get settled in. Now she enjoys her days either sleeping on my pillow on my bed or sunning herself in the pearch by the front window! Still having a sensetive stomach, I have to watch the food given to her. She enjoys the company of her bro, Onyx (formally Rastas, adopted the same day) until he becomes a pill and she rightfully puts him in his place! She is very much a talker now! She constantly bugs me on the computer by sitting on the mouse and/or keyboard, tugging on the mouse tail (the cord) or just trying to chase the curser across the screen! Though not a lap kitty yet, she very much enjoys the attention and petting that comes at all times!Having these kids around has increased my quality of life for sure! Hopefully they would be able to say the same thing!

The Kauthe Family

Rastas now Onyx
Adopted 4/11/09, Onyx (formally Rastas), has quickly latched on to his new life here. Either sunning himself on the front window perch or sleeping on the sham on my bed, Onyx has made himself right at home. When he isn't sleeping, he's either bugging his sister, Saharrah (formally Spunky (adopted the same day)), or playing with the numerious cat toys around the house! He has also developed the skill of cooking! Everytime I'm at the counter preparing a meal or snack, he bolts in from the den and jumps up on the counter to see what's being made. If a cabinet door is open, he needs to see what's inside! He figures that the house is his own private domain!Everyday when I come home, he is waiting by the door for me. And everynite I go to bed, he's right there on my shoulder to get his nightly scratch! He is definitely a lap kitty, always jumping on my lap when I sit down to watch tv. Like his sister, he loves to bug me when I'm on the computer!Having these kids around has increased my quality of life for sure! Hopefully they would be able to say the same thing!

Mahlia
Well, we adopted Mahlia in June of last year, she is a GREAT companion not only to us but to our other rescue Dog-Sadie.  She's quite the character, and we love her dearly. She's quite attached to me, and cries when I leave the house, not anymore though when I go to work, but if I go shopping or just head out very quickly. She sits at the window and wines till I come home.  LOL

My hubby JUST loves that She loves her sister Sadie, but tends to get a little rough with her, but Sadie when she's had enough puts her in her place. It's SO funny, Sadie will sit on top of her, like OK TIME OUT, and as soon as Mahlia settles down, she gets up off of her.  She's doing very well, she's quite a little looker.  People LOVE her

The Comella Family

Lloyd Boone now Load
After losing my dog Buddy due to a heart problem on Nov 20, 2009 I was heartbroken. It seemed that I would never bond with another dog so I decided to help another dog by becoming a foster.  We got a call from Almost Home of a dog in need who could be taken out of a shelter if they found him a foster home, so we said "yes".  We picked Lloyd up from the PetsMart in Schaumburg on Dec 28th, 2009.  He walked right out of there like he had known us all his life, jumped right in our car for the ride home.  He had been in a shelter they tell us for about 4 weeks and his time was soon coming to an end.  I think he knew it and was very grateful to be in a home, he didn't even mind our cat Max sharing his new digs! There was something special about Lloyd right from the start, he's very loving, freindly with all other dogs/people/kids, has great house manners, housebroken, already knew "sit" and "down", walks great on leash, not a barker, doesn't get on the furniture and is now totally trustworthy out of his crate (unless you leave food within reach). On Jan 2, 2010 we offically adopted Lloyd! I think he really likes his new life with us and his new best buddies nextdoor, Snitzel & Miszu whom we walk with everyday no matter what the weather!  I still miss my sweet Buddy but Lloyd is helping my heart not ache so much.

Thank you Almost Home for your part in saving this very special dog!

The Comella Family

Alvis now Schnitzel

My husband and I wanted to adopt a dog friend to hang out with our 4 year old Jack Russell Terrier, Miszu. We never had two dogs before, so we were unsure what kind of dog would get along with him. Then we saw Schnitzel at a Petsmart adoption show and the next weekend we brought our terrier to meet him. They got along the first minute they met and have become great friends. They play, sleep and eat together. They even chew the same nylabone at the same time. They are inseperable. Schnitzel and Miszu also have a best friend next door who was adopted from Almost Home. His name is Lloyd. Schnitzel has blossomed into a beautiful, sweet boy. We love him very much. We are so thankful to the Almost Home Foundation for saving Schnitzel from the terrible fate that awaited him in a 'kill' shelter.

The Busch Family

Teelou now Lou Lou

Lou Lou aka Tee Lou was adopted on July 1, 2009.  What a joy she has brought to us.  She  was afraid of  everything and it took a while for her to even begin to trust the littlest things such as going for a ride which we are still working on, going for walks(which will get better when the weather gets better. but most of all her trust that we will not hurt her.  She loves her petting, baths and most of all her treats when "Grandpa" comes home from work.  She has brought new life into this house for not only for Hershie (our Chocalate Lab)who missed our Puddles(who we had to put down due to a stroke) and missed terribly, but she just is sooo loveable..Thank You Almost Home and especially Sharon Lopez for helping us getting LOU LOU.I don't know what I would do without her!!!

The Schroeder Family

Daniel now DJ

We were going to an adoption show to " Just look" It had only been 2 weeks since we put down our beloved Cairn Terrier, Tiger, who was blind and deaf in one ear. I saw Daniel, now DJ, and knew he was just right. He came to our home on what would have been Tiger's 10th birthday. He's calm and loving. We should have named him CUDDLES because that's all he wants to do.

The Woods Family

Blackie now Mister Socks
We love our newest... we never had a lab before always golden mixes... what a difference. Socks is a "big kid" who just loves to play and entertain us... it didn't take long to win us over ... we love dogs. It's sad to see though that either he was abused or neglected and some things they never forget. I had surgery in July, just one month after we got SOCKS - he kept me active and busy and outside cause he loves to be out on the deck and putting on a show for all the neighbors. As you can tell I don't know who got the better deal - SOCKS a home or our new baby...

The Vance Family

Bishop
I am so happy I found Bishop! He is such a loving dog who just wants to be loved. I am thankful for Almost Home. It was a pleasure not a hassle like it was with other organizations. I know Bishop is very happy with his new family.

The Ulicny Family

Anakin now
Wile E.

We adopted Wile e (anakin) back in September, and he has been such a wonderful addition to our home! We had been looking for a dog and when I saw his sweet face on the website I knew I wanted to meet him right away. It took us maybe a whole 10 minutes to decide to adopt him after we met him.

He is a perfect match for us! He is so well behaved, he has never chewed up any furniture, never had any accidents in the house, and doesn't bark unless asked to "speak". He is so smart and has learned many tricks, and he loves children. He makes me melt everytime he looks at me with those sweet eyes.

He has brought so much happiness to our lives, and I can't imagine being without him. I don't know how anyone could ever give him up but Im so glad we have him now. I am so thankful for wile e's foster mom who took such great care of him and to the Almost Home Foundation for giving him a second chance!
The Ginnan Family

Tundra now Carter
We found Carter at an Almost Home event at our local Petsmart. We knew we wanted to adopt a dog, but we just weren't sure what kind. We met Carter and thought he would be a great addition to our home. He has been so much more than that. We are not even sure how we lived without him! It has been a year and half and he has brought our family together in so many ways. He is a wonderful dog and we are very grateful to Almost Home for bringing him to us!

Thank you!
The Giggie Family

Keona now Maya Maya (formerly Keona) has made a wonderful addition to our home. She fits right in, and quickly made herself a home her. She is so sweet. We went out of town for a couple days and I think every single person we know asked us if they could watch her (what a great problem to have!). She is so friendly to everyone she meets including children and other dogs. We love her so much, and thank you for helping us rescue her! I have attached a couple recent pictures for you to see (sitting on top of the upper couch cushions is her favorite place).

The Metz Family

Oscar and Precious

Dear Almost Home and our foster Miss Kim and Family,

We just wanted to wish you a happy new year!  We have been in our forever home for three years now, and we have these people trained pretty well.

My favorite cheese is Lorraine Swiss from the Jewel deli counter.  I still talk all the time and remind you when it is mealtime.  I have also taken a liking to sitting in laps.  Oscar likes playing the piano at 4 in the morning.  We both like sleeping in people beds.  Oscar likes to share the pillow with the little boy.  He also likes sleeping on all the pink blankies in the little girls room.

We like sleeping under the Christmas tree while the lights are on.  It is very relaxing.

Hope you are all doing well!  Let us know how it's going.  We appreciate you taking us in.  We saw a sad commercial on TV the other day that showed dogs and cats without any home.

Love,

Oscar and Precious

Juju now Miller
We got our Miller girl back in February of 2009.  She was skiddish, unsocialized and not potty trained at 7-months.  She's almost a perfect pup now.  She is so sweet, well behaved, and loves to run and play.  She didn't understand fetch or even how to play when we got her and now she's a tug-a-war and frisbee pro.  She was listed as a terrier-mix but our trainer told us she is likely a plott hound which seems likely since she looks exactly like a plott hound AND she came to us from Kentucky!  We couldn't have asked for a better dog and appreciate the work that your foundation does!  Miller is a great dog, pet and we are blessed to have her!

Thanks!   The Janus Family

Jolie now Zorra raxton now Wally We adopted Jolie now Zorra around June of 2009. It's now December.  We originally found her wandering the streets in Elgin and she was taken to a shelter in hopes that her owners would claim her. We fell in love with her for the little bit of time she was in our home but we felt if there was someone out looking for her and was sad they deserved a chance to get their puppy back. We called to try to locate her and left messages that if no one claimed her we would be interested in adopting her. Finally 7 days later someone called us & she was up for adoption because no one claimed her. She is the sweetest puppy in the world and we are so happy she finally made it home and she is very happy and spoiled. We don't regret adopting her. My husband who was never too fond of dogs loves her.

The Berendsen Family

Braxton now Wally
Just wanted to let you all know that it was back in August 0f 2008 when my husband and I adopted (Braxton), now Wally.

He is one tough pup.  Upon adoption, he was recovering from hernia surgery.  We had to take him to the vet to get the staples out and he was a champ.  About 2 months later, something just wasn't right as he started limping and I noticed sores on his lips and paws.  After a few visits to the vet, he was diagnosed with a disease called blastomycosis.  I had never heard of it.  The vet made it sound like a death sentence. Well, we found a vet that was willing to treat Wally immediately.  It was a difficult time, but Wally never gave up.  After 10 long months of treatment, Wally is now a Blasto survivor!  He is back to being a bouncing bundle of happiness everywhere he goes.  He has made a huge impact on our family and I am truly grateful to the Almost Home Foundation and all they do to rescue animals.  I would like to also thank Peter Kusch for being Wally's foster family and taking such good care of him before we adopted him.

Also, if you watch the U! you might see an Almost Home Dog in one of their commercials.  Wally from Elk Grove!

Ocho
We are told that when they found Ocho, his mother wouldn't feed him or his other eight siblings. Only three of them survived to bottle feeding and only Ocho survived past it. They named him Ocho in honor of his siblings. We saw him at an adoption show and he visited us soon after. He was so happy here that he decided to stay! He is full of energy, love and "muchos besos" (many kisses)! He loves to romp around the yard or play soccer with his brother. We love him very much and glad he has found his forever home with us!

The Greenawalt Family

Pixie now Sweetie Pie
We adopted Sweetie Pie from the foundation, and she had been fostered by two angels, Scott & April.  Sweetie was the most abused creature I'd ever seen, and the effects of the abuse were long lasting and devastating.  Her foster parents told us it would be a long road, and shared their stories of how they had worked with her to overcome the abuse she had endured.  We had Sweetie for just over three years when she became a real puppy, seeming to catch up for all that she had missed.  She over came her constant hypervigilence, extreme startle response, fear of eating out of a bowl, urinating inside, constant nervous vomiting and running away (to eventually return).  She was a gentle and loving soul who was interested in everything, was curious and playful.

She was so interactive and excited to see people, wagging her tail and crying with joy. She was with us just over three years when she died suddenly from a heart attack. We are still so sad, and miss seeing her in the places in the house she had claimed as her own. The Almost Home Foundation and the foster parents, April and Scott, gave this beautiful creature an opportunity to know a life of love, comfort and companionship in her short life.  Thank you. We will never replace her, but we will look for another companion from your organization to join our family soon.  Thank you for letting us know Sweetie Pie and to love her. Thank you for the work you do.

Maggie now Cutey

This story eventually becomes a happy ending after having a dream the night after my pet died. After losing our beloved dog Shadow after 16 years, I realized he was instrumental in not only finding our new dog "Maggie" at Almost Home but, for the realization of what unconditional love really is. Also, learned a lesson on how our animals sometimes wait for "us" to be ready to pass on.  So, was the case with this story.  It was a combination of Linda (Almost Home) and the movie Marley and Me that finally gave both Shadow and I the courage to "let go and let God take it from here." There is a well known quote that states ... "People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime." When you know which one it is, you will know what to do for that person and what their purpose in your life is. I truly believe that quote should have also included PETS. pets DO come into our life for all three: reasons, seasons and a lifetime. When that pet comes into your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with love.  To aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then the relationship may come to an end. Sometimes they die. Sometimes they run away or get lost. Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand. What we must realize is that need has been met, their work is done in our lives. Some pets come into your life for a SEASON, because your turn hascome to share, grow or learn. They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it, it is real. LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons, things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the animal and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life. Shadow was in our life for a REASON, SEASON AND A LIFETIME.  His last day on earth I was beside myself.  I didn't even go to his euthansia because his last breath (I thought) should not be experienced by my hysteria. Animals pick up on that and my husband was much better at hiding that grief.

I had called Linda (Almost Home) a number of times previously saying the end was near.  My only hopes for a new dog were sweet, small and potty trained.  Oh, and I mentioned not a white poodle as I had one 18 years ago and it was not the best pet experience I had ever had.  Anything but, a white poodle ...  Shadow however, had different plans. That night after Shadow died I had a terrible nightmare of him sitting in the backyard (which he always did unleashed.)  There was a dog chained sitting next to him.  I kept going outside in my dream and unchaining him and every time I would look out the door the dog would be chained again with Shadow looking over it. This seemed to go on for hours.  I awoke in a cold sweat looking at where Shadow use to sleep and started crying.  The dog in the dream was exactly what I told Linda I did not want ... A WHITE POODLE! The next day Linda called (with so many dogs to care for I thought she probably had forgotten my wish list.)  She said, "Well I have sweet, small and trained that just went into a foster home." There was a pause, I said, "The dog is white, right?" Yes "Linda, the dog is a poodle, right?" Yes.  I thought either Shadow had a great sense of humor from the beyond or he had picked out this dog for our family and planted it in my dream.  Either way, got in my car immediately to pick up "Cutey" at Julie's house.  I fell in love in less than a second. We work out of our house and "Cutey" thinks she's married to my husband.  A real flirt with males. We named her Maggie.  That night I told my husband to put a stake in the backyard so she could run around. I walked outside and realized Maggie was the identical dog, staked in the identical place in my yard that was in my dream. ... Thanks Shadow, DREAMS DO COME TRUE!

The Sieckman Family

Eden now Sweetheart
One hot, July day, my mom and I drove to Petsmart to just "look" at the dogs. We saw many adorable dogs and puppies. Then we saw a dog that I just fell in love with! I asked my mom if maybe we could get the dog that day. She said to call Dad and ask him to come to the store. Once my Dad and brother, Joseph arrived, I asked my Dad to see the dog and if we could keep her. He said we should find out about the dog first. We asked some questions and found that that dog would not be a good match. I was extremely upset. My dad said that maybe we could look at some other dogs.

We did and were about to leave without a dog, when my mom suggested the little, black dog. So we went over and talked to the volunteer and asked some questions. We talked as a family and decided to foster her for a week first. We named her "Sweetheart" and eventually decided to keep her. Sweetheart is very shy but friendly and sweet. She is afraid of many things like the vacuum cleaner, other dogs, whistles and scooters. Though she is afraid of many things, she loves to sleep on my bed with me and go on walks. She also loves to chase the geese on the playground and baseball fields. She wags her tail when she sees me and follows me around wherever I go.  My Mom brings her to drop me off and pick me up from school and says she is sad when I leave and happy when I come home. She is adjusting slowly but has become comfortable with all of the members of our family now and follows us around the house. She likes to be where we are.

It has been fun to watch her become more like a dog. We love Sweetheart!

The Dean Family

Tedi now Daisy
After putting our previous 15 year old dog down in September 2008, I wanted to wait at least a year before getting another dog. We walked into Petsmart in Bloomingdale on a Saturday in October 2008 and walked out with a puppy named Tedi, which my children changed to Daisy, my son and daughter were very excited still to this day they play with her in the house but they love to play with her outside in the back yard. They taught her to play tag she catches a ball and then tags them out. On weekends she goes for walks that takes about 1-2 hours. This year my children can not wait until it snows to play with her outside. We are so grateful for the Almost Home Foundation on letting us adopt our new addition to the family we try at least to make it in the Petsmart in Bloomingdale once a month so that everyone can see how Daisy(Tedi) is doing.

Thank you again Almost Home Foundation.

The Smith Family

Max We adopted Max when he was 10 weeks old. About two weeks after bringing him home he got terrible pneumonia. Thanks to a team of vets, a few days in the hospital, and a lot of breathing treatments Max is better than ever. Our big guy is such a wonderful part of our family. he is loyal and a bundle of energy. We are so thankful that Almost Home took in his mother and him!

The Leisen Family

Precious Mama now Snacks
I cannot thank the volunteers of AHF enough for taking in this special little kitty. I adopted Precious Mama November of 2008 after reading her horrifying story of abuse and since day one she has been absolutely my best friend. She was a little shy at first but has since come into her own and loves when we have company! She is funny, sweet and just the love of my life, I don't know how I got along without her! Her heartbreaking story made me want to meet her, her sweet demeanor made me realize we'd make a good pair, but its her spunk and personality that makes me fall in love with her all over again every day.

Thank you, thank you, thank you again for the time and energy spent by every volunteer with this organization.

Broadway now Sasha
We cannot thank Almost Home Foundation enough for bringing us the most wonderful addition to our family. We adopted Sasha, a 1 year old yellow lab mix, about 5 months ago.  I remember the first day that I brought her home from her foster mom.  We started playing and getting to know each other right away, and I can say that it felt like she was meant to be with us from the very start. Sasha had no prior training...so we had to start from the very beginning with house training and teaching her not to chew our furniture or paper lying around our home!  By being patient with her, staying attentive to her training, and maintaining a sense of humor, Sasha eventually became house-broken and has stopped her chewing behaviors in our home.

In fact, a few nights ago Sasha graduated from her first obedience class (with honors!). She can sit, stay, down, paw, and even come when called.  What a smart dog!  Mostly, we just love being with her.  She wags her tail and greets other dogs and people with bountiful joy...everyone loves it when she's around.  We live in the city by running paths and outdoor plots of land where Sasha loves to walk and search for squirrels.  A few of her favorite activities are chewing on her bones, fetching tennis balls, and running with her mommy along the lakefront.

Sasha adds so much richness and joy to our lives, and we are grateful for her! Thank you a million times over!

The Weiss Family

Knight It has been 8 months now since Ivan and I adopted Knight.  It all started on a Saturday at the end of December 08 when met Kathy who was showing cats at Pet Smart in Schaumburg. She asked what type of cat I was looking for and I told her that I did not have any particular criteria and that I knew that when I would see him/her, I would know. She asked me a couple of questions about our living style and introduced me to Knight, a gorgeous black cat with a tiny white spot on the tip of his tail. This was love at first sight for me and Ivan.

We went to pick him up on a cold winter day at Kathy's house and since then it has been a true happiness to have him living with us. He was very shy for a couple of weeks but the more he got used to us, the more we saw his true colors: He is acting mostly like a dog when we are home as he follows us everywhere and never misses an occasion to be pet and loved (and we cannot ignore him as mister Knight has a very strong meow!), but he loves his lazy cat moments as he takes these long naps wherever he finds a warm and comfortable place (the unmade bed has been by far his favorite place to sleep!).

We wanted to thank you guys for the job you do every day in giving these cats and dogs the life and the love they deserve. We also wanted to thank you for giving us the chance to adopt Knight and the happiness he has brought into our house since he arrived.

Sincerely
Emilie & Ivan

JuJu now Miller
I got Miller in March 2009 because our dog of 12 years had recently passed of cancer and the house was lonely without a pet. At first she was VERY shy, especially around men; she obviously hadn't been socialized. But today, six months later, she's a doll and has made friends with everyone she has come across! I moved into my own house for the first time and she has been a sweetheart and a GREAT companion.

The Janus Family

Flip
Flip has been a joy to us. He is a sweet, loving gentleman that plays so nicely with people. We brought him 2 other friends to play with. Now they have become the best buddies in the world. We have written many journals about them and taken tons of pictures of so many sweet moments that they have shared with us. Flip along with his furry friends have made our life wonderful and fun. Flip's new friends: http://lovemeow.com/story/flips-new-friends/http://lovemeow.com/video/pictures-and-video-of-the-cats/    Watching out the window: http://lovemeow.com/behavior/cats-favorite-pastime-cat-tv     We bought them new beds: http://lovemeow.com/toy/where-do-your-cats-sleep/

Thank you Almost Home Foundation for your hard work and dedication to cats and kittens.

Amy and Eric

O'Malley now Leif

Edison now Loki

Our story started out as a sad one with the loss of our five year old cat, Addison. Unfortunately, she had a cancer that spread throughout her body and the only option we had was not to let her live in pain.

My five year old daughter and I were not happy with an empty house, so for months we were going to the Saturday adoption shows looking at both cats and dogs. We just knew that we would know when we found the right fit for our family. When we saw "O'Malley", A Norwegian Forest cat, he was not quite as small as the other kittens, but when I held him I just fell instantly in love with him. We just knew he would be ours. Because of his breed we changed his name to "Leif".

We decided to go back to the adoption show the following week to look and maybe find Leif a companion. When we were introduced to "Edison", you could just tell he had a great demeanor. We stuck with the Norwegian theme and renamed him "Loki". Both, Leif and Loki filled a gap that was empty and we couldn't be happier to have them in our home. They really do make our house a home because they are always waiting to welcome us when we get there.

We are truly thankful to the wonderful staff at the Almost Home Foundation. You can see how much time and effort they put into each and every animal. After looking for months I had the opportunity to really see how they interacted with them and you can just tell that they have every individual dog and cat's best interest at heart.

Mucha Family

Red Light now Red
Red Light is just wonderful. He is everything we were hoping for. His activeness is amazing, for he can jump really high. He is the perfect dog for our household and can get trained really well.

Pookie now Annie
If I hadn't volunteered to foster dogs in need, I would never have met Annie!  Through fostering, I learned what kind of doggie- personality would be a great fit for our family, but I thought it would be a while before I found that special dog.A few months later, I took home Annie. We fell in love with her, right away! And I knew I couldn't bear to let her go.  She is a wonderful addition to our family!  She's always by my side, follows me everywhere, sleeps next to me.  She loves every dog we meet - LOVES playing with them! When we had first brought her home, she was very submissive & afraid of people; Now she walks right up to the people in our neighborhood for a sniff & a lick.  Everyone we meet is taken with her & the neighborhood kids like to pet her - some of them run a little dog-walking business, so now when I'm at work or school, she gets out for walks & company.  My aunt has a German Shepherd - Annie & I go to visit and they play till she gets worn out & falls asleep.  At home, she sits at my feet while I'm sewing then we go for walks - her nose never leaves the ground!  When we get home she runs around the house like crazy & we have play time, tug of war with her favorite stuffed squirrel, 'steal the bone' and she loves it when i gently tug on the blanket she's sitting on & chases my hand.  She still continues coming out of her shell -- even starting to tell me when she wants to play by dropping her squirrel at my feet or getting down on her front paws and jumping around - she looks so funny we all laugh.  I can't imagine life without Annie - she is sweet, patient, playful, and just a blessing!

Thanks for the opportunity to foster & to meet Annie - she has made my life so special!!

Annie & Family

Clara now Claire

And Buddy too!

Back in the fall of 2008, our family was contemplating in adding a new pet into the mix. My son & I happened to stop in at our local PetSmart one Saturday afternoon while they were having an adoption drive "just to check things out".

Well, that is when we happened upon a 10 month old golden lab named Buddy. He was there with his foster mother (who was so terrific!) and it was love at first sight! I had always been a cat-lover my entire life, but now this dog has just opened up my heart like never before. I cannot begin to describe what joy he has brought to our family. His kisses greet us every morning when we wake up, and especially when we walk through the door every night. He just loves going to the dog park, and that is where we "found" our other dog, Claire. We always take Buddy to the off-the-leash park near our home.

While there one day in the Spring of 2009, we befriended Fred - a wonderful man who fosters for Almost Home & who we got to know real well. One day we see him there with his new foster (Claire, a 1yr old Shepherd Mix). She & Buddy got along so well from Day 1. They would run around together, wrestle, etc. whenever they would see each other. My son & I begged my husband for a week because we knew how great they got along. Well, that was about 3 months ago and we all couldn’t be happier. She’s such a beautiful girl. Just a big lover who thinks she’s a lap dog!

Thank you to Almost Home & Fred for all of your kindness & generosity. Our 2 dogs are now in their Forever Home!

Zoe We can't believe that it has been less than four months since our fur baby Zoe found her way into our home and our hearts. She has made the transition beautifully as if she has always been ours. We believe that Zoe is a blessing that was sent by God to us via Almost Home ! Please accept our most sincere THANK YOU !

Mags now Maggie)
We adopted Maggie 4 weeks ago and have never been so happy with a dog or the Almost Home Foundation!  One week after Maggie came home, we were off to the North Woods!  Maggie had the time of her life and so did we!  Maggie loved chasing the ball out into the lake, making new friends, going on runs through the open fields, and getting lots of attention from all!  She needed to lose a few pounds...and the vacation really helped on that!  Maggie is looking good and a very awesome dog!

Ann,Joe, Hannah, Chloe and Maggie (Hi all my old friends!)

Vero now Capt. Morgan (Morgan)
We couldn't have asked for a better dog!  Morgan is so sweet & affectionate, we just love him!  He enjoys loooong walks & never lets us forget when he needs one!  He loves going on our boat but doesn't seem to like the water too much, but that's ok.  He didn't take long to settle in and realize he's "home".  Now he likes to protect his house by laying on the front porch and watching the world go by. We're even contemplating finding him a brother or sister.

Thanks Almost Home!

The Sturgulewski Family

Herman now Barney
Barney is the best we could ask for in a new dog!!!  He has learned to sit, give paw, retrieve his ball & we're working on "speak".  Yesterday, he started doing the Lab "butt drag" while playing in the yard.  He has already started adapting to the new food.  He is so gentle with Brianna (1 1/2 year old) & knows when to back off.  He would love to sleep in bed with us but, he doesn't have enough room so, he goes to his "bed" @ the foot of our bed.  As soon as he hears us waking up, he jumps on us & licks us to death.  We have left him alone in the house for up to 4 hours & no accidents or mischief.  In the morning, he sniffs & searches the backyard for all the rabbits & other animals that may have passed through @ night.

The Lorek Family

Brady now Barney
I just wanted to express my utmost respect and appreciation to the folks at the Almost Home Foundation. I adopted Brady last Friday, and I thought that the adoption process went very well. I would especially like to thank the two Tracy's that helped me. They were so patient, allowing extra time for my Yorkie to sniff out her new friend. Banrny is doing extremely well; he has started to settle in his new home, and is quickly becoming my Yorkie's best friend and playmate.

Barney also is fully house trained and even knows all of his basic commands! We went to the vet the other day just to get a check up and he passed with flying colors. Barney is like an "Instant Dog...just add food, water, and lots of love" :-)I will keep in touch, and pictures are on their way!

Audrey now Chloe
Our family went to PetsMart for dog food for our golden retriever and we happen to see Chloe. We weren't looking for another dog yet since our chocolate lab had suddenly passed away 2 weeks prior at the age of 11 but we had to stop and pet her. We immediately fell in love and our children kept saying "we have to bring her home". We brought our golden there to see how they would be together and they mixed well. As we were filling out the papers there were 3 other families who came to the adoption event to see Chloe because they saw her on the website. We were lucky enough to take her home and as we were leaving a woman came up to us and asked if this was Audrey (Chloe). She had come to see her as well but she was so happy that she was going home with a good family.

Chloe has had a few seizures but no meds yet and she is scared of laundry. Sounds crazy but true! You don't know what these dogs have been through and they may have some quirky ways. We love her so much! She's alot of fun and we wouldn't give her up for anything! We tell everyone about Almost Home and to really consider a rescue dog. They have so much love to give and deserve a good life! Thank you for all you do Almost Home!

The Szczerba Family

Korbel now Irie
When we first saw Korbel, he was barking like crazy!  Dad was worried about what we were getting into.  He came to our house with his foster mom,  and did not bark.  So we knew he was for us.  Since we have had him, he has entertained us nonstop!  We love all the things he gets into and we always have a new Irie story.  He loves his walks and takes his job very seriously of protecting our back yard.  He loves when his daddy comes home and jumps for joy!  He is very playful, but doesn't understand when he brings a ball back to drop it and not run away from us!  He LOVES to be chased.  He also has these weird random running in circle episodes for about ten minutes.  It cracks us up.  We love our Almost Home DOGGIE!

Doubtfire now Mickey
We adopted Mickey in August 2008, and he is very happy in his forever home. He has two kitty brothers and they all get along great! They can often be seen all sharing the same window or door screen to watch outside. The chipmunks love to put on a show (and make 'the boys' look like they're watching a tennis match)! They all get their exercise running around after each other too.Mickey has been to several training classes and is a really good boy. He loves to play frisbee & ball, do agility courses and go to day camp once a week or so. He's really well-socialized and loves to go on walks or jogs. We are thinking of having him become certified as a therapy dog to go to visit people at hospitals.Thank you for bringing this dog into our lives. He is a terrific pet and we all love him.

The Calabrese Family

Quinn now Quinn Lentino

When I first saw Quinn, we had just started thinking about adopting a dog.  I was originally looking for a little female Dachshund, when I met a small dog named Quinn, and his foster mom, Debra, while volunteering at my first adoption show.  He is a Pug and/or Chihuahua Dachshund mix, so he is a very handsome boy, and he would “talk” alll during the show, making the funniest little noises.  Debra called Quinn “Mr. Personality” since he is such a little character.  Debra asked me if I had ever thought about fostering a dog, and I when I said that I had, she asked if I would watch Quinn while she was on vacation.  I said yes and was so excited at the thought of having a dog in the house again, that I could hardly wait for his much-anticipated arrival.  From the moment Debra dropped Quinn off, I knew what our home had been missing.  I knew I would never be able to take Quinn to an adoption show again and I couldn’t wait to make him an official part of our family.  I was very anxious to let Debra know how excited I was to adopt him.

We officially adopted Quinn on May 1, 2009.  Even though Quinn wasn’t the dog we were looking for, I know that God knew he was the dog we were supposed to have and sent him to us.

From day one, he was the perfect houseguest, and every day that goes by, I am thankful that he is with us.  Being around him always brings a smile to my face.  He is always happy and loves going for walks and playing with his toys.  He is the sweetest, most well-behaved little dog in the world.  He loves his daddy and is always waiting anxiously at the door to greet him when he comes home at night.

I cannot thank Quinn’s foster mom enough.  I am forever grateful to her for taking such good care of Quinn and helping him find his new family.  He is a wonderful addition to our home and we love him dearly.  He is the greatest dog and we are proud to be his mom and dad.

Regis now
Hoo Hoo
We love our little Hoo Hoo: he weighed 12 lbs when we brought him home two weeks ago and now he's at15lbs!. Our vet says he should be about 16, so we are on track. We are also going to school together with a non forcing, non cohercive training program. I didn't want Hoo Hoo to have to deal with correcting training as he seemed to be a little fearful of men at first.  He likes to be with me all the time, although he's relaxed enough now that I can to the bathroom by myself now! He also loves everyone in our neighborhood, and enjoys 3-4 walks a day! He and Biski our 9 year old terrier rescue are lying on the bed with me now, each chewing happily away on their respective bones.  He is a cuddly lovey fast learning honey bun of dog. Thank you for choosing us to give Hoo Hoo his forever and ever home.

General Patton now Bosco
Shortly after bringing him home, he had a seizure.  It scared me since the dog also did not seem to relate to me, nor did he appear to understand what I was saying.  But not long after his first seizure he had another one.  I contacted Almost Home and he send him for a vet exam.  It turned out he had epilepsy and he also had a diagnosis of a heart murmur.  I thought what did I get myself into. Should I give him back to Almost Home, but even though he did not appear to know English, he appeared to be a sweet dog & who else would adopt this poor thing.  I tried speaking to him in English & then Polish & he did not appear to understand me nor know his name so I renamed him Bosco. I took him by a neighbor & asked her to speak Spanish to him &her comment was he did not know Spanish either.

He had a few more seizures but my vet gave him additional tests and told me not to worry it can still happen with meds. & adjusted the phenobarbital level. Then I took another dog just to foster so he did not have to go to the kennel for the week & all of a sudden Bosco woke up and was running around the yard with the new dog, I then adopted & named Cosmo. After seeing how Bosco related to another another Almost Home dog, how could I not accept a brother for him, plus Bosco finally learned his name, and now some days he follows me around the house.

My advice to you is, do not turn your back on a special needs animal, they can bring you much joy plus show you their appreciation with their kisses.

The Barda Family

BeBe now Zoe
A million "THANK YOU's" to Almost Home especially foster parents Irene and  Bob for providing such a loving foster home. We adopted Zoe (formerly Bebe) on Saturday, April 11th our lives and hearts are forever changed ! Irene and Bob shared lots of great info about Zoe's personality and quirks which helped to make the transition smooth. The first afternoon we brought Zoe home she even napped in our laps and at night she slept with us. We feel truly blessed to have found Zoe, it's as if she has always been our fur baby! Thank you Almost Home!

Spooks now Chance
Spooks now Chance came to us at 4 months old as our new foster.  Our jack russell terrier Kingston fell in love with his new foster brother and we had no choice but to keep him!!!  Chance is now almost a year old and is the most playful, adventurous, loving dog we could ever ask for!  Kingston and Chance run around the yard so fast, love to chase squirrels and just hang out in the sun!  Thank you Almost Home Foundation for rescuing this new member of our family!

The Brice Family

Hiba now Maggie
Maggie's come out of her shell since coming home around Thanksgiving 2008 and is a mischief-loving border collie with a loving heart.  She likes to redecorate by shortening curtains on occasion, and shares her fashion savvy by occasionally chomping a wayward sock.  Toys are demolished where possible, and herded into color groups when they are a bit more durable (after she bounces them around the floor).  She is my personal trainer, always suggesting I walk a bit faster and further.  She is also aspiring to be a bed hog and couch potato.  Maggie is genereous with canine kisses and incredibly sweet, but has appointed herself watch dog over me, even though snowmen can be scary to a border collie.  Maggie is an awesome little girl. Thank you Almost Home Foundation for giving her a chance.

Gail Leeds

Cosmo now Abby
We adopted Cosmo now Abby in May 2008.  Never had I imagined she would be so wonderful.  We have a 3 year old daughter who was afraid of dogs but took a liking to Abby instantly.  Now our daughter just loves her, always giving her hugs and kisses.  And Abby is wonderful with her.  You never really know how a dog will react with a child or children and with Abby she is a real gift. She had just given up her puppies when we adopted her and she kept her mother instinct.  Anytime there are children around her she treats them extra gentle. We are so thankful we found Abby at the adoption show.  She has made the perfect addition to our family.

Thank you for bringing us together.

Nixee Now Pepper

In February 2007, I went to  PetsMart, because I heard from a friend that the Almost Home Foundation was adopting dogs there. My family was looking for an adorable pet, and we wanted a rescue dog or puppy. My family and I walked in and it was like a kid in the candy store. We saw so many dogs, and there were so many choices.

Finally, this one black and white spotted brown eye dog caught our attention. We asked the kind lady about the cute dog, and she said that her name was Nixie. She didn’t like other dogs, because she might have been picked on when she was on the street. Since we did not have any other dogs at that time we could take Nixie home that day. We sign all the papers saying that we wanted her. Also, I was so excited myself.

Of course we did we fell completely in love with her spunky personality and adorable brown eyes. Before she knew her name we change it to Pepper to fit her better. Three beautiful years later we still have her in our cozy home and she well behaved. Also, she loves to play with other dogs now and we even got her a not so little brother to play with.  I love her very much and I will always be with her forever and ever.

*remember to get a dog from a shelter!

Cow now Marley
We adopted Marley almost 3 months ago and can't believe how much he has become a part of our family! He has grown almost 10 lbs and is getting taller by the day. We are currently enrolled in puppy classes and Marley is a star student because he is so food motivated, wave a treat in front of him and he will do anything! We have a very active lifestyle and Marley loves being outdoors and going on trips with us. This month we went on road trip to Oklahoma, where he had a blast playing with our friend's dogs. Last month was to Indiana. His puppy naps are becoming fewer and far between and he is a little ball of energy! Life was so boring without him and we are having a blast as proud new parents!!!

Rusty Bonz
We had very recently adopted a little beagle, Tootsie, from Almost Home in November, 2008 (scoll down to see Tootsie's Success Story below).  One Saturday, after getting her chipped, we stopped at the PetSmart in Schaumburg to try to get Tootsie "acquainted" with other dogs. Well, I walked in first and my husband was behind me with Toots.  Lo and behold, I saw the most precious little red beagle!  I fell in love with him!  His name was (and still is) Rusty Bonz.  I really felt he called out to me: "Take me Home with you".  And the very good news was that he and Tootsie touched noses and seemed to get along. I couldn't get Rusty out of my mind all week, so the following Saturday I found out where he was going to be shown.  So I went and immediately picked him up and took him to his "furever" home. It was a little rough at first because Rusty was so nervous.  But I know he is settling in nicely.  And he and Tootsie play all the time.  They are great playmates together, which makes my husband and I very happy. I never thought we would be a two-dog family, but I'm so glad we got Rusty (and Tootsie) in our lives!  I can't imagine life without them.

Thank you, Almost Home Foundation!  We can't imagine life without you, too!

Libby and Emma

Hello, my name is Rebecca.  In May of 2007 I become the Mommy to Libby and Emma Kitty, a pair of sisters that were up for adoption at a local Petsmart.  It was love at first site, for all three of us.  Libby came right to me and didn't let me go.  Emma latched on as well and started purring almost immediatly.  Now, two years later, I couldn't be happier with my girls.  They have grown into beautiful cats and wonderfil companions.

Emma is no longer the runt of the litter, and is bigger then her sister.  She loves to talk to you and has learned about belly rubs from the dog. Libby is the littlest cat I have ever had and I can't get enough of her cuddles.  My tiny one, as I call her, is the Alpha in the house.

I just can't thank the staff and foster mother enough, the kittens we feel in love with are perfect in our family.  I can't wait to get home after work to see them, and they are always waiting for me.  Keep up the good work, you are all angels to these animals.

Rebecca Caron
& Emma and Libby

Cypress now Gracie Belle
Gracie is truly a blessing to our home.  She was shy on the first day, but soon warmed up to us.  She is a very good little girl, she knows every room in the house and has found many favorite spots for naps.  She always lets us know when it is time for a "walk" and now that spring is around the corner, she is exploring her new outdoor space and seems to love it.

Everyone who meets her has fallen in love with her.  We are so fortunate she has found her "forever home" with us!!  Gracie's favorite things: When Daddy gets home from work,  sleeping UNDER the covers, getting belly rubs, and getting AND giving big kisses.

Janie
One year ago, we picked up Janie from the transport to foster her.  She was only the 2nd dog we fostered and the first one to come from a hi-kill shelter in Southern Illinois.  She was so shy and timid when we took the leash from the handler, I was thinking what did we get ourselves in to?  Treats would hardly lure her along with us.  We just kept walking confidently but gentle with her, her ears were back and tail between her legs.

Halle, our other Almost Home dog, came with and wasn’t sure what to make of her.  When we had gotten home she was scared of the stairs and didn’t know what to make of everything.  I was beginning to wonder if she had even been in a house before. With love and care, and the help of Halle, Janie’s true personality started to come through.  She had some allergies and mites but with treatment she started to feel better.  She only made it to a few adoption shows when we were deemed ‘foster home failures’, which is the term of endearment when you adopt your foster dog.

Janie has been a great addition to our family.  She has come in 1st in her obedience class and 2nd in intermediate obedience class.  We wouldn’t change anything for the world…it has been so gratifying seeing her blossom into the great dog she is now.  Now you can find me at the adoption shows on Saturday helping other dogs find a forever home of their own. Here is a picture of Janie (l) & Halle (r) – best buddies :)

Scrappy now Boomer
We adopted a wonderful shepherd dog, his adopted name was Scrappy but we renamed him Boomer in July 08.  We had just stopped by the store, not knowing it was adoption Day.  My daughter saw Boomer, so happy to be with people, we were able to take him for a walk with the store employee. Once we decided we wanted him, it was hard to wait for us to be able to bring him home. All of our family loves him so much. He has his own bed just for him and we cover him nightly with his blankets and he sleeps in our room.  He gets a lot of walks in the good weather about 4 a day, and in the cold weather my husband walks him twice. He sure loves the outside, He can be out for hours. We all love him so much. He is trying to threaten the squirrel population in our yard, but the squirrels have just managed to stay out of his reach.
The Purcell Family

Mork
We adopted Mork in June of 2008. We had been looking for another dog after the loss of our beloved schnoodle, Lucy, the Thanksgiving before. We wanted a similiar dog to Lucy: light-haired, a female, trained, non-shedding. And we wound up with Mork - a black, untrained shedding male puppy who had been rescued from a high-kill shelter with 2 days to go and who needed a home and loving family.

It just shows that sometimes it pays to keep an open mind, because Mork has  turned out to be a wonderful addition to our family. He was housebroken several months later, we took him to puppy classes and he has fit in so beautifully with our family. His shedding (and my fears of allergies) has been minimal due to some good grooming advice and he has the sweetest, calmest personality one could wish for.

It is almost as if he knew we were his rescuers and is determined to show his gratitude.  Everyone who meets him falls in love with him and we are now looking to adopt another dog!

The Erchull Family

Scout
Seven-year old black lab, Scout, joined our family--my husband and me, three horses, two other dogs and two kittens--just under a month ago.  He is a complete angel.  So sweet, so eager to please, a lapdog in a giant body!

Our other two lab mixes (both girls), Belle and Harmony, fell instantly in love with Scout.  In fact, they've never reacted to another dog with such enthusiasm, adoration and joy.  They have welcomed him into the fold as if he were always meant to be here... and, indeed, I think he was!  Scout is a perfect boy and a great blessing.  We cannot wrap our minds around the idea that he almost died in a high kill shelter.

Thank you, Almost Home, for rescuing our big love!

The Baxter Family

Runt now Cooper
We just adore Copper. I'll tell you it started out kind of bumpy, but now eveything is good. I love Almost Home Foundation, and I highly suggest you guys - for you take wonderful care of your dogs. I was going to put a picture of Cooper on here, but my computer wont let me. I just wanted to let you guys know you are amazing, and to keep up the good work; for we'll be adopting again from you guys.

Much love

We are very fortunate to have adopted Ruby from Almost Home Foundation.  We absolutely adore her, she has turned our happy home into a more fun , loving place to be.  The first day she was here I knew she was in her forever home.

Thank you AHF, we found a wonderful companion, and friend forever.

Donna Kerulis, Il.

Dorian Gray now Smokey
Smokey is just awesome.  What a gentle personality and a lap Kittie He is.  Only at night when I relax on the couch with a blanket.  He is usually running around with his two year old sister destroying the house.:)  His older sister Kittie Kittie lost her playmate in August of this year.  She was 23 years old and still running around until her last days.. Both cats wrestle, play together and wash each other too.  Should you have the picture of Dorian that was posted on the web, could you send it to me please..  I would like to put it in the Cat Scrap Book.  Baby pic...  He was 6 months old when I adopted him.

Thank you very much.

Big Mac now Mac

Marshal
now
Snoopy

For our family, "No More Dogs" turned into one adopted dog, Snoopy, from AHF.  His bio is further down on this webpage!

Then after that, "Only One Dog" turned into our second adopted dog, Mac, from AHF.Mac's story began with our trip to Petsmart's adoption show. We took our neighbor to find a companion for her. There were so many dogs there, it could break your heart.

Our son immediately gravitated towards Big Mac, and he never looked back. It was our family that ended up adopting, instead of our neighbor.  Once at home, Mac did his very best to test our love for him. This included things like peeing in the house, jumping our six foot privacy fence, chewing up plants, etc. But we didn't cave in. We KNEW he was a good dog, and we were right. Mac is now settled in to his forever home, completely spoiled, completely loved, and completely content.

We love you Snoopy and Mac!

Paprocki Family

Jack & Max One year ago my we welcomed Jack and Max into our home, and our lives changed forever.  Their foster Mom, Jennifer, happened to stop by my office with the kittens in tow when they were just rescued.....naturally all the girls in the office were oooh-ing and aaah-ing over the kitties.  They were such tiny little things! I had forgotten how adorable kittens are.  When one of my coworkers lifted Max (brown tabby) out of the pet carrier, I was amazed at how tiny and helpless he was!  I peered in, saw Jack (solid black), and made the decision then and there that those two kittens were going to be ours.

Working with Jennifer and the Almost Home Foundation was the most pleasant experience we could have hoped for.  Our “babies” were taken care of by someone who loved them as much as we already did.  We were given updates on their growth and behavioral progress...and finally! They were ready to “leave the nest”....  the big day had arrived. On October 20, 2007, we officially adopted Jack and Max at an Almost Home adoption day in Schaumburg.  We were thrilled to bring them home and introduce them to their new “digs”.  Quite some time had passed since we had introduced new kittens into our home (since 1988) and we knew it would be a whole new world for Jack, Max, and us.

What fun we had watching them explore the house and getting to know their new home!  The “boys” settled in quickly and made our home their home. Each pounce, crouch, and run had us thrilled.  We noted every bite they took, and yes, even raked the litter box with rapture!  Then reality set in...and we realized that this was the perfectly awesome future we were looking forward to....being greeted each morning by a furry friend.....sharing the recliner with a warm fuzzy companion.....laughing at their crazy antics when they chase each other through the house ....being welcomed home each day when we return from work, and, in general, thoroughly enjoying every aspect of having cats in our home again.

It seems that the boys have always been here, I don’t even remember life before them.  We look forward each day to the interaction and fun they bring to our lives. This would not have been possible without the wonderful work that’s done by Almost Home.  Thank you so much! Thank You!!! to the Almost Home Foundation for the love and joy you have given us in Jack and Max.  And a very special Thank You to Jennifer, who made it all possible.  Jennifer was patient with me when I had LOTS of kitten questions, after not having a kitten in quite some time....and she took such good care of our boys.  This has been, and continues to be, a remarkable experience for us all.

Lexus White now Lexi
Hello,I am the LUCKY person who adopted Lexus White (renamed Lexi) in February, 2008. He is such a great companion! I cannot tell you how he has changed my life for the better. Everyone who meets Lexi adores him. My grandchildren feel fortunate to have a gramma with a dog because they cannot have one at this time. He makes us all howl with laughter with his antics!

Much appreciation,

Edna Feulner, Oak Park

Nightcrawler now Smelly Cat
I am happy to report I'm staying with my foster family. My foster mom couldn't give me up. She fell in love with me at day one and nursed me to health when the odds were stacked against me. She had every intention of getting me healthy to go to my forever home, she has visited and talked with several applicants and we were all waiting for me to get healthy. I'm 98% healthy now but still have a few minor digestive issues - however, as of 1-1-09 - she officially changed my name and took me in permanently.

I have changed my attitude and I now tell the foster kittens that I rule the house - LOL. I also get to stay with my buddy the great dane named Mouse. Who would ever believe a mutant tiny runt cat like me would be pals with a mutant great dane - but that's the hand we were dealt and we were both placed in the right family at the right time.

I hope all my other foster friends find their forever home in 2009, but if they don't at least I know they are in a warm house at the end of the night and not locked in a cold cage with a steel bottom not even a blanket.

Thank you Paul and Deanne for calling my foster mommy on Mother's Day 2008, without both of you  I would not have survived the night - now I'm here to stay.

Martini
The first time I saw him he was sitting under a chair of the  person showing him, he was skinny, timid and his hair was bald in spots, I found out he was from Kentucky, almost put down because he was so infested with ticks and mites, almost home found him, treated him, and saved his life!!! I fell in love with this 8month old puppy, a few months prior to this my 14 yr golden had to be put to rest:( I adopted him and now 7 months later he is confident, gained about 30 more pounds, full silky beautful black coat,He is supposed to be Lab mix,  Mostly lab, think he is mixed with shepherd, He is the joy of my life!

Thank you so Much Almost Home Foundation, You are the best, God bless You all!!!!!!!

Jitters now Tootsie
Let me just tell you that God, indeed, does work in mysterious ways...  In October, 2008, my husband and I lost our precious beagle, Lea, to Lyme's Disease.  We saved her from an animal shelter and had her for four years.  Lea was the love of our lives.  She was taken very quickly, and we were totally devastated.  Just a few weeks later, Claire (co-founder of Almost Home) called me in a slight panic!  She said there was this wonderful female beagle being held at the DuPage County Animal Shelter (a kill shelter), and she (Claire) was scared to death that this precious little dog would be "put down". So I called the shelter to find out more that this dog.

As it turned out, she was 2 1/2 years old, already spayed and pottie trained.  I also found out her name was "Jitters" because she was so very nervous at the shelter with all the noise and what not.  The gal at the shelter e-mailed me a picture of Jitters, and I fell in love! I called my husband and told him the situation and showed him the picture.  He said he would pick up Claire the very next day and the both of them would pick up Jitters from the shelter!

At first, we just wanted to be a Foster parents, as we weren't sure about the dog getting acclimated in our house as we had not met her.  She has been with us since November 20, 2008 (the Thursday before Thanksgiving), and now both of us would NEVER give this sweetie up for anything.  I changed her name to "Tootsie", which fits her to a tee.  (Plus both of us love calling her "Toots"!) Claire came by on Friday, January 2, 2009, so I could sign the contact.  Now Tootsie is ours and no one can take her from us!  We love her and, as far as we can tell, she loves us, too.  Although we still miss Lea terribly, Tootsie and her unconditional love has helped us so very much.  And, we'd like to think that we have saved another beagle and given so much love to her.

Thank you, Claire, and Almost Home Foundation!!  I don't know what we would have done without your wonderful organization.

Pharaoh now Piper
We adopted Piper on December 13, 2008.  When we got to PetSmart and my kids saw her, they fell in love.  She leaned into them and we all knew instantly, she is the one.  She has done so well and has a heart of gold.  She loves everyone.  She has brought so much happiness to our family since we put our previous dog to sleep.  We never had a Christmas without a dog and thanks to Piper, this year was no different.  She loves her toys and bones, and always has something in her mouth when she meets us at the door, and curls up with us at bedtime.

Thank you Almost Home for helping us find this gem.

Spritzer now Iris
We adopted "Spritzer" (aka: Iris) in June of 2008. She is a beautiful black German Shepard. Iris was heart worm positive and also suffered with two intestinal parasites. She was also about 25 pounds under weight. Now... she is heart worm and parasite fee. She weighs 75 pounds and is the best dog ever! She is a wonderful friend and addition to our family. Iris is also quite an athlete. She runs approximaetly 15 miles per week with her owner along with playing and running in the backyard with her dog friend "Mookie."

Dilbert  now Buddy
We have had Buddy for two years and he has brought such joy into our lives.  I think it is time to save another dog. We are looking for a sister for Bud. Labs are great dogs.

Montano now Frankie
We are so grateful to Almost Home Foundation for allowing us to bring our sweet Frankie into our home!  He is a wonderful companion and we can't imagine our life without him.  This minute, as he snoozes at my feet, I am overcome by the love that grows from caring for a pet.

Thank you, AHF!

Mad
Max now Max
Max has blended beautifully into our home. He has an older "brother" (our 9 year old Spitz mix) to play with in addition to an active 7 year boy who wanted a dog that plays fetch.  Max had some bad "puppy" habits that we have worked on with him. He liked to nip hello, tackle my son and chew anything in reach, including the clothes on our backs.  He now gives a friendly lick and recognizes his own toys. He can sit, lay down and stay (for a little while) on command.  He came to us housebroken and with an outgoing personality. Though large for a lap dog, he loves to cuddle and wants to be close to all members of the family. Max was even the star of our family Christmas card.

Thank you for saving him and allowing my family to bring Max home. I have always believed in adopting animals and really feel Max is a great reason why.

Best regards, Mickey Grossman

Mandy now Lullaby  Lull-La for short
What can I say about our darling Lull-La?….The fact that someone adopted her and then returned her to Almost Home was our good fortune. At 4 pounds 3 ounces she was grossly underweight. So traumatized by her past she would barely move and preferred of course to stay in her crate. Never having a rescue mill dog before all discipline and boundaries went out the window as we worked on getting her health restored and gaining her trust. Her tail never wagged and there were no kisses. Being on a leash was terrifying and every time I tried to pet her she would cringe. Within time those tasty slivers of chicken, soft kinds words and 3, count them 3 comfortable beds started to make a difference.

After her dental she became so much healthier. At 7 pounds 3 oz our Lullaby is thriving. Someone told me, “the hardest thing is getting the fear out of the dog.” He couldn’t have said it better. Soon it will be her 6 month anniversary and our sick and wounded girl is a different dog. She loves to walk on the leash with her head held high. Her health which was such a challenged is now stable and good and we acquired a sister for her now and the two have become friends. In fact they have become very popular as the Ladies of March in a recent 2009 calendar.

For those of you who have the time and patience I urge you not to be apprehensive about adopting. Yes, it can be a challenge but you will find rewards that you never dreamed possible from these children in fur coats.
